আমাদের HSC English 2nd Paper এবং University Admission Test-এ Pronoun Referencing একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ও কমন টপিক। অনেক সময় Sentence-এ Pronoun ঠিকমতো ব্যবহার না করায় অর্থের বিভ্রান্তি তৈরি হয়, একেই বলা হয় Pronoun Ambiguity বা অস্পষ্টতা।

১. Basic Concept: Antecedent কী?#

Sentence-এ একটি Pronoun যে Noun-এর পরিবর্তে বসে, সেই Noun-টিকে বলা হয় Antecedent (পূর্বপদ)।

• Example: *Rahim is a good boy. He studies regularly.*
• এখানে Rahim হলো Antecedent এবং He হলো Pronoun।

একটি বাক্যে Pronoun Reference তখনই সঠিক হবে, যখন Pronoun-টি স্পষ্টভাবে তার Antecedent-কে নির্দেশ করবে।

২. Common Types of Pronoun Ambiguity (অস্পষ্টতার ধরন)#

ক. Ambiguous Reference (দ্ব্যর্থবোধক রেফারেন্স)#

যখন একটি বাক্যে দুটি সমজাতীয় Noun থাকে এবং পরবর্তী Pronoun দিয়ে কাকে নির্দেশ করা হচ্ছে তা পরিষ্কার বোঝা যায় না:

• Incorrect: *Salam met Kalam and told him that he had passed the exam.*
• সমস্যা: এখানে 'he' কে? Salam নাকি Kalam?
• Correct: *Salam met Kalam and told him that Salam had passed the exam.* (অথবা: Kalam had passed the exam - অর্থের ওপর ভিত্তি করে Noun-টি নির্দিষ্ট করতে হবে।)

খ. Unstated / Missing Antecedent (অনুপস্থিত পূর্বপদ)#

যখন এমন একটি Pronoun ব্যবহার করা হয় যার মূল Noun-টি বাক্যে উল্লেখই নেই:

• Incorrect: *In the newspaper, they reported the road accident.*
• সমস্যা: 'They' কারা? কোনো নির্দিষ্ট মানুষ বা Noun উল্লেখ নেই।
• Correct: The newspaper reported the road accident. (অথবা: The journalists reported the road accident in the newspaper.)

গ. Broad Reference (অস্পষ্ট This, That, Which)#

অনেক সময় this, that, it, বা which দিয়ে পুরো একটি ক্লজ বা ধারণাকে ইঙ্গিত করা হয়, যা বিভ্রান্তি তৈরি করে:

• Incorrect: *Nabil did not study before the exam. This caused his failure.*
• Correct: *Nabil did not study before the exam, and this negligence caused his failure.* (This-এর সাথে একটি উপযুক্ত Noun যোগ করে অর্থ স্পষ্ট করা হয়েছে।)

ঘ. Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement Error (সংখ্যা বা লিঙ্গগত অমিল)#

Noun Singular হলে Pronoun-ও Singular হতে হবে; Noun Plural হলে Pronoun-ও Plural হবে:

• Incorrect: *Every student must bring their admit card.*
• Correct: *Every student must bring his or her admit card.* (Formal English অনুযায়ী; অথবা Plural করতে চাইলে: All students must bring their admit cards.)

৩. HSC ও Admission-এর জন্য Pro-Tips#

• 1.প্যাসেজের Pronoun গুলো আন্ডারলাইন করুন: HSC প্রশ্নে সাধারণত ৫টি ভুল Pronoun Reference থাকে।
• 2.Look for the Antecedent: প্রতিটি he, she, it, they, this দেখলে ভাবুন—"এটি কাকে বোঝাচ্ছে?"
• 3.Noun দিয়ে প্রতিস্থাপন করুন: যদি দেখেন Pronoun-টি অস্পষ্ট বা একাধিক ব্যক্তিকে বোঝাতে পারে, তাহলে Pronoun সরিয়ে সরাসরি মূল Noun-টি বসিয়ে দিন।
