Definite Article: The

English Grammar-এ 'The' হলো একমাত্র Definite Article। বাংলা ভাষায় কোনো কিছুকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে আমরা সাধারণত শব্দের শেষে 'টি', 'টা', 'খানা', 'খানি' যোগ করি (যেমন: বইটি, ছেলেটি, কলমটা)। ইংরেজিতে এই নির্দিষ্টতা প্রকাশ করতে Noun-এর পূর্বে 'The' ব্যবহার করা হয়।

১. নির্দিষ্ট কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বোঝাতে (Specific Person or Thing)#

যখন বক্তা ও শ্রোতা উভয়েই জানেন কোন জিনিসটির কথা বলা হচ্ছে:

• Example: Give me the pen. (আমাকে কলমটি দাও — নির্দিষ্ট কোনো কলম)।
• Example: I know the boy. (আমি ছেলেটিকে চিনি)।

২. কোনো কিছু দ্বিতীয়বার উল্লেখ করলে (Second Mention)#

কোনো Noun প্রথমবার অনির্দিষ্ট হিসেবে আসলে 'a/an' বসে, কিন্তু পরবর্তীতে একই Noun পুনরায় উল্লেখ করলে 'the' বসে:

• Example: I bought a book. The book is very interesting.
• Example: A man came to our house. The man was a doctor.

৩. পৃথিবীতে যা একটিমাত্র রয়েছে (Unique Objects)#

যেসব জিনিস পৃথিবীতে বা মহাবিশ্বে একক:

• Example: The sun, the moon, the earth, the sky.
• Sentence: The sun rises in the east.

৪. নদী, সাগর, উপসাগর ও পর্বতমালা (Rivers, Seas, Oceans, Mountain Ranges)#

ভৌগোলিক বৈশিষ্ট্যের নামের পূর্বে 'The' বসে:

• নদী: The Padma, The Jamuna, The Meghna.
• সাগর/মহাসাগর: The Bay of Bengal, The Atlantic Ocean.
• পর্বতমালা: The Himalayas (তবে একটিমাত্র পর্বতের ক্ষেত্রে 'the' বসে না, যেমন: Mount Everest).

৫. ধর্মগ্রন্থ ও সংবাদপত্র (Holy Books & Newspapers)#

• ধর্মগ্রন্থ: The Holy Quran, The Bible, The Gita.
• সংবাদপত্র: The Daily Star, The Prothom Alo.

৬. Superlative Degree-এর পূর্বে#

সবচেয়ে ভালো, খারাপ, বড় বা ছোট তুলনা বোঝাতে:

• Example: Shakib is the best all-rounder in the world.
• Example: It is the tallest building in Dhaka.

৭. সমগ্র জাতি বা শ্রেণী বোঝাতে (Class/Community)#

• জাতি: The Bengalis are brave. / The English speak English.
• কোনো Adjective যখন পুরো শ্রেণীকে নির্দেশ করে: The rich are not always happy. / We should help the poor.

৮. যুক্তরাষ্ট্রীয় দেশ ও ঐতিহাসিক স্থান/তারিখ#

• সাধারণত দেশের নামের আগে 'the' বসে না, কিন্তু যেসব দেশে 'United', 'Republic', বা 'Kingdom' থাকে:
• The USA, The UK, The UAE (কিন্তু শুধু Bangladesh বা India-এর পূর্বে 'the' বসে না)।
• ঐতিহাসিক তারিখ: The 21st of February, The 26th of March, The 16th of December.

গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু সতর্কতা (Common Mistakes to Avoid):#

• ১.খাবারের নামের পূর্বে সাধারণ অর্থে 'the' বসে না (e.g., I take breakfast, not 'the breakfast')।
• ২.ভাষার নামের পূর্বে 'the' বসে না (e.g., English, Bangla), কিন্তু ভাষার পর 'language' শব্দ থাকলে 'the' বসে (e.g., The English language)।
