Introduction to Numbers & Ordinals as Determiners#

English Grammar-এ Determiners হলো এমন শব্দ যা Noun-এর পূর্বে বসে Noun-টিকে নির্দিষ্ট (specific) বা অনির্দিষ্ট (general) করে নির্দেশ করে, কিংবা তার পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যা প্রকাশ করে।

Numbers বা সংখ্যাগুলোকে Determiner হিসেবে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়:

• 1.Cardinal Numbers (সাধারণ সংখ্যা বা গণনা সূচক)
• 2.Ordinal Numbers (ক্রমবাচক সংখ্যা বা ক্রম সূচক)

১. Cardinal Numbers as Determiners#

Cardinal numbers সরাসরি পরিমাণ বা গণনা বোঝায়। যেমন: one, two, three, ten, a hundred, fifty ইত্যাদি। এগুলো Noun-এর পূর্বে বসে সংখ্যা নির্দেশ করে।

• One / A / An: এদের পর সর্বদা Singular Countable Noun বসে।
• Example: I have one extra pen. (আমার একটি অতিরিক্ত কলম আছে।)
• Two বা তার বেশি (Two, Three, Hundred, etc.): এদের পর সর্বদা Plural Countable Noun বসে।
• Example: There are five students in the classroom.
• Example: He bought two tickets for the concert.

⚠️ Common Mistake: অনেকেই বলে ফেলেন "I have two brother" — এটি ভুল। সঠিক হবে: *"I have two brothers."*

২. Ordinal Numbers as Determiners#

Ordinal numbers কোনো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা ঘটনার অবস্থান (position) বা ক্রম (order) নির্দেশ করে। যেমন: first, second, third, fourth, next, last ইত্যাদি।

• Rules for Ordinals:
• Ordinal number-এর পূর্বে সাধারণত 'the' বসে, কারণ অবস্থান নির্দিষ্ট থাকে।
• সাধারণত এদের পর Singular Countable Noun বসে (তবে ক্ষেত্রবিশেষে Plural-ও হতে পারে, যেমন: the first two days)।

• Examples:
• Rahim is the first boy in our class. (রহিম আমাদের ক্লাসের প্রথম ছেলে।)
• This is the second time I am warning you. (এটা আমি তোমাকে দ্বিতীয়বারের মতো সতর্ক করছি।)
• Read the third chapter carefully.

৩. Word Order: যখন Cardinal এবং Ordinal একসাথে বসে#

যদি একটি বাক্যে একই Noun-এর পূর্বে Ordinal এবং Cardinal উভয় Determiner-ই একসাথে আসে, তবে নিয়মটি হলো:

Determiner (the/my) + Ordinal + Cardinal + Plural Noun

• Incorrect: Cardinal + Ordinal (three first boys ❌)
• Correct: Ordinal + Cardinal (the first three boys ✔️)

Examples:

• The first two lessons are very easy. (প্রথম দুটি অধ্যায় খুবই সহজ।)
• Please solve the next three questions. (পরবর্তী তিনটি প্রশ্ন সমাধান করো।)
• He ate the last two mangoes.

৪. Bangladeshi Learners-দের জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ টিপস#

• 1.'The' ব্যবহার করতে ভুলবেন না:

• ভুল: He got second prize. ❌
• সঠিক: *He got the second prize.* ✔️

• 2.Dates লেখার ক্ষেত্রে:

• সাধারণত লেখার সময় Cardinal লেখা হলেও পড়ার সময় Ordinal পড়তে হয়। যেমন: 21st February (উচ্চারণ: the twenty-first of February).

• 3.Possessive Determiners-এর সাথে:

• Possessive Determiner (my, his, our) থাকলে 'the' বাদ যায়।
• Example: This is my first job (NOT: my the first job).
