Paired Conjunctions and Parallelism

আজকের লেসনে আমরা শিখবো ইংরেজি গ্রামারের খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক—Paired Conjunctions (Correlative Conjunctions) এবং এদের সাথে সম্পর্কিত Parallelism (প্যারালেলিজম) এর নিয়ম। বিসিএস (BCS), ব্যাংক জব কিংবা ইউনিভার্সিটি অ্যাডমিশন টেস্টে এখান থেকে প্রায়ই প্রশ্ন আসে।

১. Paired Conjunctions কী?#

যেসব Conjunction জোড়ায় জোড়ায় (pairs) ব্যবহৃত হয়ে দুটি শব্দ, ফ্রেজ বা ক্লজকে যুক্ত করে, তাদের Paired Conjunctions বা Correlative Conjunctions বলা হয়।

সবচেয়ে কমন কিছু Paired Conjunctions:

• Both ... and (উভয়ই ... এবং)
• Not only ... but also (শুধু এটিই নয় ... ওটিও)
• Either ... or (হয় এটি ... অথবা ওটি)
• Neither ... nor (এটিও নয় ... ওটিও নয়)
• Whether ... or (কিনা ... অথবা)

২. The Golden Rule: Parallelism (প্যারালেলিজম)#

Parallelism মানে হলো ব্যালেন্স বা ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখা।

রুল: Conjunction-এর প্রথম অংশের পর যে Grammatical Form (Noun, Adjective, Verb বা Phrase) বসবে, দ্বিতীয় অংশের পরেও ঠিক একই Grammatical Form বসাতে হবে।

• Noun + Noun:
• ❌ Incorrect: She likes not only music (Noun), but also to dance (Infinitive).
• ✔️ Correct: She likes not only music (Noun), but also dance (Noun).

• Adjective + Adjective:
• ❌ Incorrect: The guy is both intelligent (Adjective) and has kindness (Verb Phrase).
• ✔️ Correct: The guy is both intelligent (Adjective) and kind (Adjective).

• Verb + Verb:
• ❌ Incorrect: You can either stay (Verb) here or going (Gerund) home.
• ✔️ Correct: You can either stay (Verb) here or go (Verb) home.

• Prepositional Phrase + Prepositional Phrase:
• ❌ Incorrect: The keys are neither on the table nor the drawer.
• ✔️ Correct: The keys are neither on the table nor in the drawer.

৩. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রুল: Subject-Verb Agreement#

যখন দুটি Subject-কে Either...or, Neither...nor, বা Not only...but also দিয়ে যুক্ত করা হয়, তখন Verb নির্ধারিত হয় সবচেয়ে নিকটবর্তী Subject (২য় Subject) অনুযায়ী।

• Example 1:
• Neither the teacher nor the students were present. (students প্লুরাল, তাই were হয়েছে)
• Example 2:
• Neither the students nor the teacher was present. (teacher সিঙ্গুলার, তাই was হয়েছে)
• Example 3:
• Not only Rahim but also his friends are going to Cox's Bazar.

*(নোট: Both ... and এর ক্ষেত্রে সাবজেক্ট সবসময় Plural হয় এবং Verb-ও Plural হবে। যেমন: Both Rahim and Karim are brilliant.)*

৪. কমন ভুল (Misplacement of Conjunction)#

Conjunction-এর জোড়াকে সঠিক জায়গায় না বসালে বাক্য ভুল হয়ে যায়।

• ❌ Incorrect: He not only lost his phone, but also his wallet. (এখানে 'not only'-র পরে বসেছে Verb 'lost', কিন্তু 'but also'-র পরে বসেছে Noun 'his wallet'। তাই এটি প্যারালাল নয়।)
• ✔️ Correct: He lost not only his phone (Noun), but also his wallet (Noun).

Q1: She wants to travel not only to Japan ________ to South Korea.

• (A) but
• (B) and also
• (C) but also
• (D) as well as

👉 Answer: (C) but also (কারণ 'not only'-র সাথে পেয়ার হিসেবে 'but also' বসে)।

Q2: Either the manager or his assistants ________ responsible for the mistake.

• (A) is
• (B) are
• (C) was
• (D) has

👉 Answer: (B) are (কারণ নিকটবর্তী সাবজেক্ট 'assistants' হলো Plural)।

Q3: Identify the correct sentence:

• (A) He is both a good cricketer and plays football well.
• (B) He is both a good cricketer and a good footballer.

👉 Answer: (B) (কারণ 'both'-এর পর Noun phrase 'a good cricketer' এবং 'and'-এর পর Noun phrase 'a good footballer' প্যারালাল স্ট্রাকচারে আছে)।
