Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement (সহজ ভাষায় নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ)#

English Grammar-এর একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং পরীক্ষায় (BCS, Bank, University Admission) বারবার আসা টপিক হলো Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement।

১. Antecedent কী?#

'Antecedent' শব্দের অর্থ হলো "যা পূর্বে বসে"। বাক্যে একটি Pronoun যে Noun বা Noun Phrase-এর পরিবর্তে বসে, সেই Noun-টিকে বলা হয় Antecedent।

• নিয়ম: Pronoun-কে সবসময় তার Antecedent-এর Number (Singular/Plural) এবং Gender (Male/Female/Neutral) অনুযায়ী বসাতে হবে।
• উদাহরণ:
• Rahim completed his homework. (এখানে 'Rahim' হলো antecedent, তাই pronoun হিসেবে 'his' বসেছে)।

২. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Rules (Rules for Competitive Exams)#

Rule 1: Singular Indefinite Pronouns#

শব্দগুলো দেখতে প্লুরাল মনে হলেও এরা মূলত Singular:

• Each, every, everyone, everybody, someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, no one, nobody, neither, either.
• এদের পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত Pronoun সবসময় Singular হবে।
• Incorrect: Everyone must submit their assignment.
• Correct: Everyone must submit his or her assignment.
• Note: ফরমাল ইংলিশে Gender নির্দিষ্ট না থাকলে his or her অথবা জেন্ডার-নিউট্রাল হিসেবে his ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Rule 2: 'Either...or', 'Neither...nor' এবং 'Or / Nor'#

যখন দুটি Noun বা Pronoun or / nor / either...or / neither...nor দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়, তখন Pronoun-টি সবচেয়ে কাছের (Nearer) Noun/Antecedent অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয়।

• Example 1: Neither the teacher nor the students completed their work. (Students প্লুরাল, তাই 'their')
• Example 2: Neither the students nor the teacher completed his/her work. (Teacher সিঙ্গুলার, তাই 'his/her')

Rule 3: 'And' দ্বারা যুক্ত Antecedent#

দুটি Singular Noun যদি and দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়, তবে Pronoun সাধারণত Plural হয়।

• Example: Sabbir and Tanvir lost their way in the forest.

ব্যতিক্রম: যদি দুটি Noun একই ব্যক্তি বা ধারণাকে বোঝায়, তখন Singular Pronoun বসবে:

• The Headmaster and Secretary delivered his speech.

Rule 4: Collective Noun (Committee, Jury, Team, Family)#

• যদি দল বা সমষ্টিটি একতাবদ্ধ (as a single unit) হয়ে কাজ করে, তবে Pronoun হবে Singular (it/its)।
• Example: The committee has published its report.
• যদি দলের সদস্যরা আলাদা আলাদাভাবে (divided/individually) কাজ করে, তবে Pronoun হবে Plural (they/their)।
• Example: The jury were divided in their opinions.

Rule 5: 'Many a' এর ব্যবহার#

• 'Many a' এর পরে Noun এবং Pronoun উভয়ই Singular হয়।
• Example: Many a student failed to reach his or her target.

Answer: (B) his or her ব্যাখ্যা: 'Every player' সিঙ্গুলার antecedent, তাই Pronoun-ও singular ('his or her') হবে।
