Connectors of Contrast and Concession

English Grammar-এ দুটি বিপরীতমুখী বা অপ্রত্যাশিত ধারণাকে (opposite or surprising ideas) যুক্ত করার জন্য Connectors of Contrast and Concession ব্যবহার করা হয়। HSC, Admission Test এবং BCS পরীক্ষায় এখান থেকে প্রায়ই প্রশ্ন আসে। চলুন সহজ বাংলায় নিয়মগুলো দেখে নেওয়া যাক:

১. Connectors of Contrast (সরাসরি বৈসাদৃশ্য বোঝাতে)#

যখন দুটি বিষয়ের মধ্যে সরাসরি পার্থক্য বা বৈসাদৃশ্য দেখানো হয়:

ক. But / Yet#

• ব্যবহার: দুটি Independent Clause-কে যুক্ত করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
• Example: He worked hard, but he could not pass. (সে কঠোর পরিশ্রম করেছিল, কিন্তু সে পাস করতে পারেনি।)

খ. However / On the other hand / In contrast#

• ব্যবহার: সাধারণত নতুন বাক্যের শুরুতে বসে এবং এর পর একটি Comma (,) বসে।
• Example: Dhaka is very crowded. However, it offers many job opportunities.
• Example: Rahim likes coffee. On the other hand, Karim prefers tea.

গ. While / Whereas#

• ব্যবহার: দুটি বিষয়ের সমান্তরাল তুলনা (comparison) করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
• Structure: Clause 1 + while/whereas + Clause 2
• Example: He loves reading books, whereas his brother loves playing games.

২. Connectors of Concession (অপ্রত্যাশিত ফলাফল বোঝাতে)#

কোনো একটি শর্ত থাকা সত্ত্বেও যখন অপ্রত্যাশিত বা বিপরীত ফলাফল ঘটে:

ক. Although / Even though / Though#

• অর্থ: যদিও / তবুও
• Structure: Although / Even though + Subject + Verb (Clause), Main Clause
• Example: Although it was raining heavily, they played football.
• Note: Even though তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি জোরালো (stronger contrast) বোঝায়।

খ. Despite / In spite of#

• অর্থ: সত্ত্বেও
• Structure: Despite / In spite of + Noun / Noun Phrase / Verb-ing
• Example: In spite of being sick, he attended the exam.
• Example: Despite his poverty, he is completely honest.

৩. Common Mistakes (বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীদের সাধারণ ভুলসমূহ)#

• 1.Although এবং But একসাথে ব্যবহার করা (Major Mistake):

• ❌ Incorrect: Although he is poor, but he is honest.
• ✔️ Correct: Although he is poor, he is honest. (অথবা: He is poor, but he is honest.)

• 2.Despite-এর পর 'of' বসানো:

• ❌ Incorrect: Despite of working hard, he failed.
• ✔️ Correct: Despite working hard, he failed. / In spite of working hard, he failed.

• 3.Despite-এর পর পুরো Clause বসানো:

• ❌ Incorrect: Despite he was tired, he kept walking.
• ✔️ Correct: Despite being tired, he kept walking. (অথবা: Despite the fact that he was tired, he kept walking.)
