Correlative Conjunctions

আজকে আমরা শিখব Correlative Conjunctions। এগুলো খুবই সহজ, জাস্ট কিছু জোড়া শব্দ (pairs) মনে রাখলেই ক্লিয়ার হয়ে যাবে!

Correlative Conjunctions কী?#

সহজ কথায়, যে conjunction-গুলো sentence-এ একা বসে না, বরং জোড়ায় জোড়ায় (pairs) বসে দুটো সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শব্দ, phrase বা clause-কে কানেক্ট করে, তাদের Correlative Conjunctions বলে।

চলেন সবচেয়ে কমন ও দরকারি ৫টি জোড়া দেখে নিই:

১. Either... or (হয় এটা... না হয় ওটা)#

যখন দুটি অপশনের মধ্যে যেকোনো একটিকে বেছে নেওয়া বোঝায়।

• Example: You can have either tea or coffee. (তুমি হয় চা নয়তো কফি নিতে পারো।)
• Example: Either Rahim or Karim will do the work.

২. Neither... nor (এটাও না... ওটাও না)#

দুটি অপশনের কোনোটিই না—এমন নেগেটিভ অর্থ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

• Example: He likes neither tea nor coffee. (সে চাও পছন্দ করে না, কফিও না।)
• Example: Neither the teacher nor the students were present.

৩. Not only... but also (শুধু এটাই না... ওটাও)#

যখন একজন বা কোনো বিষয় সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত কিছু যোগ করা হয়।

• Example: Shakib is not only a good batsman but also a great bowler. (সাকিব শুধু ভালো ব্যাটসম্যানই না, একজন দারুণ বোলারও।)
• Example: She speaks not only Bengali but also English.

৪. Both... and (উভয়ই / এটাও এবং ওটাও)#

দুটি জিনিস বা ব্যক্তিকে একসাথে বোঝাতে বসে।

• Example: I like both biryani and tehari. (আমি বিরিয়ানি ও তেহারি দুটোই পছন্দ করি।)
• Example: Both my brother and my sister are doctors.

৫. Whether... or (কিনা / এটা হোক বা ওটা হোক)#

দুটো বিকল্প বা অনিশ্চয়তা প্রকাশের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• Example: I don't care whether you stay or leave. (তুমি থাকো বা চলে যাও, তাতে আমার কিছু যায় আসে না।)
• Example: Let me know whether you can come or not.

🔥 ২টা গোল্ডেন রুলস (পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয় যেখানে):#

Rule 1: Parallel Structure (সমান ব্যালেন্স থাকতে হবে)#

Pair-এর প্রথম অংশের পর যে parts of speech বসবে, দ্বিতীয় অংশের পরেও সেই একই parts of speech বসতে হবে।

• ❌ Wrong: He is not only intelligent but also works hard. (এখানে adjective + verb হয়ে গেছে, মিল নেই)
• ✔️ Correct: He not only studies hard but also works hard. (Verb + Verb)

Rule 2: Subject-Verb Agreement (Proximity Rule)#

Either... or, Neither... nor, এবং Not only... but also দিয়ে যখন দুটি ভিন্ন Subject যুক্ত হয়, তখন Verb-এর সবচেয়ে কাছের Subject (2nd Subject) অনুযায়ী Verb নির্ধারিত হয়।

• Example 1: Neither my brother nor my friends are coming. ('friends' plural, তাই 'are' বসেছে)
• Example 2: Either my friends or my brother is coming. ('brother' singular, তাই 'is' বসেছে)

Fill in the blank: Neither Tanvir nor his brothers ______ (is/are) interested in cricket. 👉 Answer: are (কারণ Verb-এর কাছের subject 'brothers' হলো Plural!)
