Articles with Names and Geographical Terms

English Grammar-এ Articles (A, An, The) ব্যবহারের ক্ষেত্রে Proper Nouns (ব্যক্তি বা স্থানের নাম) এবং Geographical Terms (নদী, সাগর, পাহাড় ইত্যাদি)-এর নিয়মগুলো অনেক সময় confusing মনে হতে পারে। চলুন, খুব সহজভাবে Banglish-এ নিয়মগুলো বুঝে নিই।

১. Names of People (ব্যক্তির নাম)#

• সাধারণ নিয়ম: কোনো ব্যক্তির নামের আগে সাধারণত Article বসে না।
• Example: Rahim is a bright student. (The Rahim হবে না)

• ব্যতিক্রম ১ (পুরো পরিবার বোঝাতে): যখন কোনো surname-এর সাথে plural যোগ করে পুরো পরিবারকে বোঝানো হয়, তখন 'The' বসে।
• Example: The Chawdhuries have invited us to dinner.

• ব্যতিক্রম ২ (তুলনা করতে): কারো গুণের তুলনা করতে অন্য কারো নাম আনলে 'A/An' বা 'The' বসতে পারে।
• Example: You are a Shakespeare, I see! (তুমি তো দেখছি শেক্সপিয়রের মতো গুণী!)
• Example: Kazi Nazrul Islam is called the Shelley of Bangladesh.

২. Countries, Cities, and Continents (দেশ, শহর ও মহাদেশের নাম)#

• সাধারণ নিয়ম: দেশ, শহর, বা মহাদেশের নামের আগে কোনো Article বসে না (Zero Article)।
• Example: I live in Bangladesh.
• Example: Dhaka is a crowded city.
• Example: Asia is the largest continent.

• ব্যতিক্রম (The বসবে যখন):
• দেশের নামে যদি Republic, Kingdom, States, বা Emirates থাকে:
• The United States of America (The USA)
• The United Kingdom (The UK)
• The United Arab Emirates (The UAE)
• The People's Republic of Bangladesh (Official title হলে 'The' বসবে)
• Plural নামের দেশগুলোর আগে:
• The Netherlands, The Philippines, The Maldives

৩. Rivers, Seas, and Oceans (নদী, সাগর ও মহাসাগর)#

• সবসময় 'The' বসে:
• নদী (Rivers): The Padma, The Meghna, The Jamuna, The Nile, The Amazon
• সাগর/উপসাগর (Seas & Gulfs/Bays): The Bay of Bengal, The Red Sea, The Arabian Sea
• মহাসাগর (Oceans): The Indian Ocean, The Atlantic Ocean, The Pacific Ocean

৪. Mountains and Islands (পাহাড় ও দ্বীপ)#

• একক পাহাড় বা চূড়া (Single Peak): No Article (Article বসে না)।
• Example: Mount Everest (The Mount Everest হবে না), Keokradong
• পর্বতমালা (Mountain Range / Chain): 'The' বসবে।
• Example: The Himalayas, The Alps, The Rockies

• একক দ্বীপ (Single Island): No Article.
• Example: Sandwip, Bhola, Sri Lanka
• দ্বীপপুঞ্জ (Group of Islands): 'The' বসবে।
• Example: The Andaman Islands, The West Indies

৫. Deserts and Forests (মরুভূমি এবং বনাঞ্চল)#

• বিখ্যাত মরুভূমি এবং বনের নামের আগে 'The' বসে।
• Example: The Sundarbans is our pride.
• Example: The Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert in the world.

৬. Directions (দিক নির্দেশক শব্দ)#

• North, South, East, West ইত্যাদির আগে Preposition থাকলে 'The' বসে।
• Example: The sun rises in the east.
• Example: Cox's Bazar is in the south of Bangladesh.
• কিন্তু শুধু Adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহার হলে Article বসে না: We drove south.
