বিভিন্ন Competitive Exam যেমন BCS, Bank Job, University Admission টেস্ট এবং দৈনন্দিন Spoken English-এ এই টপিক থেকে প্রচুর Subject-Verb Agreement-এর ভুল ধরা হয়।

১. Plural-Only Nouns (যেসব Noun সবসময় Plural)#

এসব Noun-এর কোনো Singular Form নেই। এদের শেষে সাধারণত ‘s’ বা ‘es’ থাকে (বা দুটি সমান অংশ নিয়ে গঠিত কোনো জিনিস বোঝায়)। মনে রাখবেন, এদের পরে সবসময় Plural Verb (are, were, have ইত্যাদি) বসে।

ক) Tools & Instruments (যন্ত্রপাতি/সরঞ্জাম):

• Scissors (কাঁচি)
• Pliers (প্লায়ার্স)
• Tongs (চিমটা)
• Glasses / Spectacles (চশমা)
• Binoculars (দূরবীন)

খ) Clothes / Garments (পোশাক-আশাক):

• Trousers / Pants / Jeans (প্যান্ট)
• Shorts (হাফপ্যান্ট)
• Pajamas (পায়জামা)

গ) অন্যান্য Plural-only শব্দ:

• Belongings (জিনিসপত্র)
• Surroundings (পারিপার্শ্বিক অবস্থা)
• Goods (পণ্যদ্রব্য)
• Earnings / Savings (উপার্জন/সঞ্চয়)
• Congratulations

💡 Important Rule (A Pair of): যদি এই শব্দগুলোর আগে "A pair of" যুক্ত হয়, তবে Verb কিন্তু Singular হবে! * Incorrect: My trousers is dirty. * Correct: My trousers are dirty. * Correct: A pair of trousers is bought yesterday.

২. Singular-Only Nouns (যেসব Noun সবসময় Singular)#

এদের দেখতে Plural মনে হতে পারে (শেষে ‘s’ থাকার কারণে) কিংবা এরা Uncountable Noun, তাই এদের সবসময় Singular হিসেবে গণ্য করা হয় এবং এদের পরে Singular Verb (is, was, has ইত্যাদি) বসে।

ক) দেখতে Plural কিন্তু আসলে Singular:

• News (সংবাদ) -> *The news is shocking.*
• Subjects/Disciplines: Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Politics, Ethics, Statistics.
• Example: Mathematics is my favorite subject.
• Diseases (রোগব্যাধি): Measles (হাম), Mumps, Rickets.
• Example: Measles is an infectious disease.
• Games/Sports: Billiards, Darts, Chess.

খ) Uncountable Nouns (কখনো Plural ‘s/es’ যোগ করবেন না):

• Advice (Advices কখনো হয় না)
• Furniture (Furnitures ভুল)
• Information (Informations ভুল)
• Luggage / Baggage
• Poetry (Poetries ভুল, তবে Poems হতে পারে)
• Scenery (Sceneries ভুল)
• Bread, Hair, Machinery, Traffic, Knowledge

⚠️ Common Mistake: * Incorrect: He gave me many good advices. * Correct: He gave me a lot of good advice (অথবা: many pieces of advice). * Incorrect: All the furnitures are sold. * Correct: All the furniture is sold.

৩. Special Case: দেখতে Singular কিন্তু ব্যবহারে Plural!#

নিচের Noun-গুলোর শেষে কোনো ‘s’ বা ‘es’ নেই, কিন্তু এরা জাতি বা দল বোঝায় এবং সবসময় Plural Verb গ্রহণ করে:

• Cattle (গবাদি পশু) -> *The cattle are grazing in the field.*
• Police -> *The police have arrested the thief.*
• People (মানুষজন)
• Gentry (ভদ্রলোক শ্রেণি)
• Poultry (হাঁস-মুরগি)
