Verb Patterns and Non-Finite Clauses

Master verb complements, infinitives, gerunds, participles, and multi-word verbs.

📌 Introduction: Verb Patterns & Non-Finite Clauses

১. Major Verb Patterns#

Pattern 1: Verb + To-Infinitive#

কিছু নির্দিষ্ট Verb-এর পর সরাসরি to + base form বসে।

  • Common Verbs: want, decide, hope, plan, promise, refuse, offer, agree, afford
  • Examples:
  • I decided to sit for the BCS exam. (আমি বিসিএস পরীক্ষায় বসার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি।)
  • He refused to sign the document.

Pattern 2: Verb + Gerund (Verb + -ing)#

কিছু নির্দিষ্ট Verb আছে যেগুলোর পর পরবর্তী Verb-টির সাথে অবশ্যই -ing যুক্ত করতে হয়।

  • Common Verbs: enjoy, avoid, mind, consider, postpone, admit, practice, suggest
  • Examples:
  • Would you mind closing the door? (mind to close হবে না!)
  • Bangladeshi students should practice speaking English daily.
  • He avoided meeting me in Dhanmondi.

Pattern 3: Verb + Object + To-Infinitive#

এখানে Main Verb-এর পর আগে একটি Object বসবে, তারপর to-infinitive বসবে।

  • Common Verbs: tell, ask, advise, encourage, remind, invite, warn
  • Examples:
  • The doctor advised him to reduce smoking.
  • My father reminded me to pay the electricity bill.

Pattern 4: Causative Verbs (Verb + Object + Bare Infinitive)#

কিছু Verb-এর পর Object বসে, কিন্তু তারপর to ছাড়া শুধু Base Verb বসে (Bare Infinitive)।

  • Common Verbs: make, let, have
  • Examples:
  • Our teacher made us write the assignment again. (made us to write হবে না!)
  • Please let me go home now.

Pattern 5: Meaning Change (To-infinitive vs Gerund)#

কিছু Verb-এর পর to-infinitive এবং -ing দুটোই বসে, কিন্তু অর্থ পুরোপুরি বদলে যায়:

  • Stop:
  • He stopped smoking. = সে ধূমপান পুরোপুরি ছেড়ে দিয়েছে।
  • He stopped to smoke. = সে অন্য কোনো কাজ বন্ধ করে ধূমপান করার জন্য দাঁড়িয়েছে।
  • Remember:
  • Remember to bring your admit card. = অ্যাডমিট কার্ড আনতে ভুলো না (ভবিষ্যতের কাজ)।
  • I remember visiting Cox's Bazar as a child. = শৈশবে কক্সবাজার যাওয়ার স্মৃতি আমার মনে আছে (অতীতের স্মৃতি)।

২. Non-Finite Clauses#

Non-Finite Clause মূলত ৩ ধরণের হয়:

  • 1.To-Infinitive Clauses: উদ্দেশ্য (Purpose) বা কারণ বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
  • Example: To clear the traffic jam, the government constructed the metro rail.
  • 2.Present Participle (-ing) Clauses: একই সাথে দুটি কাজ বা কোনো কাজের কারণ/ফলাফল বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
  • Example: Hearing the sudden sound, all students ran outside.
  • Example: Living in Dhaka, you have to get used to traffic jams.
  • 3.Past Participle (-ed / -en) Clauses: সাধারণত Passive অর্থে সংক্ষেপে কথা বলতে এটি বসে।
  • Example: Constructed in 2022, the bridge connects the southern districts with the capital.

৩. Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Students Make#

  • ❌ Incorrect: I look forward to meet you.
  • Correct: I look forward to meeting you. (look forward to-এর 'to' একটি Preposition, তাই এরপর Gerund বসবে।)
  • ❌ Incorrect: He made me to cry.
  • Correct: He made me cry. (make causative verb-এর পর Bare Infinitive বসে।)
  • ❌ Incorrect: I stopped to take tea because it was unhealthy.
  • Correct: I stopped taking tea because it was unhealthy. (চা খাওয়া বন্ধ করা বোঝাতে Gerund বসবে।)

💡 Quick Summary Checklist#

  • Want, decide, hope ➡️ + to + V1
  • Avoid, enjoy, mind ➡️ + V-ing
  • Make, let ➡️ + Bare Infinitive (V1)
  • To + Verb / Verb-ing দিয়ে বড় বড় বাক্য ছোট ও স্মার্ট করা যায় (Non-Finite Clause).
