English Grammar-এ এমন কিছু specific verbs আছে, যেগুলোর পর অন্য কোনো verb আসলে সেটিকে সবসময় Gerund (Verb + ing) আকারে বসাতে হয়। এগুলোর পর কখনোই 'to + verb' (Infinitive) বসে না।

১. Gerund কী?#

যখন কোনো Verb-এর শেষে -ing যুক্ত হয়ে সেটি বাক্যে Noun হিসেবে কাজ করে, তখন তাকে Gerund বলে। যেমন:

• Swimming is good for health. (সাঁতার কাটা স্বাস্থ্যের জন্য ভালো)
• I like reading. (আমি পড়তে পছন্দ করি)

২. Most Common Verbs Followed by Gerunds#

নিচের verb-গুলোর পর সবসময় Gerund (V-ing) বসবে:

• 1.Enjoy (উপভোগ করা)

• Correct: I enjoy playing cricket.
• Incorrect: I enjoy to play cricket. ❌

• 2.Avoid (এড়িয়ে চলা)

• Correct: Try to avoid eating too much junk food.
• Incorrect: Try to avoid to eat... ❌

• 3.Mind (আপত্তি থাকা / কিছু মনে করা)

• Correct: Would you mind closing the window?
• Incorrect: Would you mind to close... ❌

• 4.Finish (শেষ করা)

• Correct: She finished cooking dinner before 8 PM.

• 5.Practice (অনুশীলন করা)

• Correct: You should practice speaking English every day.

• 6.Suggest (প্রস্তাব দেওয়া)

• Correct: He suggested going to Cox's Bazar this weekend.

• 7.Deny (অস্বীকার করা) / Admit (স্বীকার করা)

• Correct: The thief denied stealing the phone.
• Correct: He admitted making a mistake.

• 8.Keep (চালিয়ে যাওয়া)

• Correct: Keep trying, you will succeed in your BCS/job exam.

• 9.Postpone / Delay (দেরি করা / পিছিয়ে দেওয়া)

• Correct: They postponed holding the meeting.

৩. Phrasal Verbs / Expressions followed by Gerund#

কিছু common phrases আছে যাদের শেষে Preposition 'to' থাকে, কিন্তু এরপরও V-ing (Gerund) বসে (Infinitive নয়):

• Look forward to: I look forward to meeting you. (দেখা করার অপেক্ষায় আছি)
• Used to / Accustomed to (অভ্যস্ত): I am used to waking up early.
• With a view to (উদ্দেশ্যে): He went to Dhaka with a view to finding a job.
• Can't help (না করে না পারা): I can't help laughing.

৪. Common Bangladeshi Mistakes (সতর্কতা!)#

❌ ভুল: Would you mind to give me a pen? ✔️ সঠিক: Would you mind giving me a pen?#

❌ ভুল: I look forward to hear from you. ✔️ সঠিক: I look forward to hearing from you.
