Gerunds after Prepositions
Gerunds after Prepositions (Preposition-এর পর Gerund-এর ব্যবহার)
Use -ing forms after prepositions, including in fixed expressions.
আজকের English Grammar লেসনে আমরা শিখব খুব সহজ কিন্তু University Admission Test এবং BCS/Job Exam-এ বারবার আসা একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ টপিক— Gerunds after Prepositions.
১. Basic Rule: Preposition + Gerund (Verb + ing)#
যেকোনো Preposition (যেমন: of, for, about, in, at, without, by, before, after ইত্যাদি)-এর ঠিক পর যদি কোনো Verb আসে, তবে সেই Verb-এর সাথে অবশ্যই '-ing' যোগ করতে হবে। Verb + ing যুক্ত হয়ে সেটি Noun-এর কাজ করে, যাকে আমরা বলি Gerund।
📌 Formula: Preposition + Verb + ing (Gerund)
কেন Gerund বসে? Preposition-এর পর সবসময় একটি Object (Noun বা Pronoun) বসতে হয়। Verb সরাসরি Preposition-এর অবজেক্ট হতে পারে না। তাই Verb-এর সাথে -ing যোগ করে তাকে Gerund (Verbal Noun) বানানো হয়।
২. Examples & Explanation (উদাহরণ):#
- Without:
- ❌ Incorrect: You cannot pass without study hard.
- ✔️ Correct: You cannot pass without studying hard. (কঠোর পড়ালেখা ছাড়া পাস করা অসম্ভব।)
- For:
- ❌ Incorrect: Thank you for invite me.
- ✔️ Correct: Thank you for inviting me. (আমাকে দাওয়াত করার জন্য ধন্যবাদ।)
- Good at / Interested in:

- Instead of:
- ✔️ Correct: He watched movies instead of studying. (পড়াশোনার বদলে সে মুভি দেখছিল।)
৩. সবচেয়ে বড় ফাঁদ (The 'To' Trap / Exception):#
আমরা সাধারণত জানি, 'to'-এর পর Verb-এর Base Form (V1) বসে—যাকে বলে Infinitive (যেমন: I want to go)।
কিন্তু কিছু নির্দিষ্ট Idiomatic Phrasal Preposition আছে যেগুলোর শেষে 'to' থাকে এবং এরা Preposition হিসেবে কাজ করে। এদের পরে কিন্তু Verb-এর সাথে '-ing' (Gerund) বসাতে হবে! BCS এবং Admission পরীক্ষায় এখান থেকেই প্রশ্ন আসে।
Common Phrases ending in 'to' followed by Gerund:
- Look forward to (অধীর আগ্রহে অপেক্ষা করা)
- With a view to (উদ্দেশ্যে)
- Get used to / Be used to (অভ্যস্ত হওয়া)
- Accustomed to (অভ্যস্ত)
- Adverse to / Averse to (বিমুখ বা অনিচ্ছুক)
- Object to (আপত্তি করা)
- Prefer ... to (অধিকতর পছন্দ করা)
Examples:
- ❌ Incorrect: I am looking forward to meet you.
- ✔️ Correct: I am looking forward to meeting you.
- ❌ Incorrect: He went to the library with a view to read.
- ✔️ Correct: He went to the library with a view to reading books.
- ✔️ Correct: I am used to waking up early. (লক্ষ্য রাখুন: শুধু 'used to' হলে V1 হতো, কিন্তু 'am used to' থাকায় gerund হয়েছে।)
৪. Quick Practice (নিজেকে যাচাই করুন):#
- ১.He prevented me from _______ (go) there.
- ২.She succeeded in _______ (solve) the math.
- ৩.We are committed to _______ (protect) the environment.
Answers:
- ১.going (Preposition 'from'-এর পর Verb+ing)
- ২.solving (Preposition 'in'-এর পর Verb+ing)
- ৩.protecting ('committed to'-এর পর Gerund বসে)
Summary:#
Preposition + Verb আসলেই চোখ বন্ধ করে Verb-এর সাথে -ing যুক্ত করে Gerund বানিয়ে ফেলবেন, শুধু মনে রাখবেন 'to' থাকলে দেখতে হবে সেটি সাধারণ Infinitive নাকি Phrasal Preposition (যেমন: with a view to, look forward to)।
