Bare Infinitives
Bare Infinitives (বেয়ার ইনফিনিটিভ)
Use infinitives without to after modals and selected verbs.
Bare Infinitive কী?#
সাধারণত আমরা জানি, Infinitive মানে হলো to + verb-এর base form (যেমন: to go, to play, to read)। কিন্তু ইংরেজি গ্রামারে এমন কিছু ক্ষেত্র আছে যেখানে verb-এর আগে 'to' উহ্য (silent বা বাদ) থাকে, শুধু verb-এর base form বসে। এই 'to' ছাড়া infinitive-কে বলা হয় Bare Infinitive বা Zero Infinitive।
চলেন সহজ নিয়মে দেখে নেই কোন কোন জায়গায় Bare Infinitive ব্যবহার করতে হয়:
১. Modal Auxiliary Verbs-এর পর#
যেকোনো modal verb যেমন—can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must ইত্যাদির পর সরাসরি verb-এর base form বসে, কোনো 'to' বসে না।
- Incorrect: You must to do this.
- Correct: You must do this.
- Example: I can swim across the river.
(নোট: ought to এবং used to ছাড়া বাকি সব modal-এ bare infinitive হয়।)
২. Make, Let এবং Have (Causative Verbs)-এর পর#
Active voice-এ এই verb-গুলোর পর object বসলে পরবর্তী verb-টি Bare Infinitive হয়।
- Let: অনুমতি দেওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে।
- Correct: Let him go now. (Not: to go)
- Make: কাউকে দিয়ে কোনো কাজ করানোর ক্ষেত্রে।
- Correct: The teacher made the students write an essay. (Not: to write)
- Note: Passive voice হলে কিন্তু 'to' ফিরে আসে! যেমন: He was made to cry.
৩. Verbs of Perception (অনুভূতি বা ইন্দ্রিয় সংক্রান্ত verb)#
See, watch, hear, notice, feel, observe ইত্যাদি verb-এর পর active voice-এ bare infinitive বসে (অথবা continuous কাজের ক্ষেত্রে gerund/V+ing বসে)।
- Correct: I heard her sing a beautiful song. (Not: to sing)
- Correct: We watched him cross the street.
৪. Had better, Would rather, Had sooner ইত্যাদি Phrases-এর পর#
BCS, Bank এবং University Admission Test-এ এই রুলটা খুব বেশি আসে!
- Had better (বরং ভালো):
- You had better consult a doctor. (Not: to consult)
- Would rather (বরং/অধিকতর পছন্দ):
- I would rather die than beg. (Not: to beg)
৫. 'But' এবং 'Except'-এর পর#
যখন বাক্যে do / does / did + nothing / anything থাকে এবং এরপর 'but' বা 'except' বসে, তখন verb-টির bare infinitive রূপ হয়।
- He did nothing but laugh all day. (সে হাসাহাসি ছাড়া কিছুই করেনি।)
- She does everything except cook.
৬. Help verb-এর বিশেষ ব্যবহার#
'Help' এমন একটি verb যার পর Bare Infinitive অথবা To-Infinitive দুটোই ব্যবহার করা যায়। তবে আধুনিক ইংরেজিতে Bare Infinitive বেশি প্রচলিত।
- She helped me clean the room. (Bare infinitive - বেশি ন্যাচারাল)
- She helped me to clean the room. (সঠিক)
