Hello learners! আজকে আমরা English Grammar-এর একটি খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং প্রায়ই ভুল হওয়া topic নিয়ে কথা বলব—'Possessives before Gerunds'। BCS, Bank Exam, IELTS বা University Admission Test-এ এই নিয়ম থেকে প্রায়ই প্রশ্ন আসে।
- ১.Gerund কী?
Verb-এর সাথে -ing যুক্ত হয়ে যখন তা বাক্যে Noun-এর কাজ করে, তখন তাকে Gerund বলে। (যেমন: reading, swimming, going, singing ইত্যাদি)।
- ২.মূল নিয়ম (The Core Rule):
যেহেতু Gerund একটি Noun-এর মতো কাজ করে, তাই Gerund-এর ঠিক আগে যদি কোনো Pronoun বা Noun বসে, তবে সেটির Objective form (him/me/them) না হয়ে Possessive form (his/my/their/John's) হবে।
- Possessive Pronouns/Adjectives: my, our, your, his, her, their, its.
- Possessive Nouns: Rahim's, Karim's, the teacher's.
- ৩.কমন ভুল এবং সঠিক উদাহরণ (Common Mistakes vs Correct Use):
❌ ভুল: She did not like me going there. ✔ সঠিক: She did not like my going there. (ব্যাখ্যা: সে 'আমাকে' অপছন্দ করেনি, অপছন্দ করেছে 'আমার যাওয়াটাকে' [my going]। কার যাওয়া? আমার, তাই 'me' না হয়ে 'my' হবে।)
❌ ভুল: I appreciate him helping the poor. ✔ সঠিক: I appreciate his helping the poor. (ব্যাখ্যা: 'helping' একটি gerund, তাই তার আগে possessive adjective 'his' বসবে।)
❌ ভুল: Do you mind Tanvir staying with us? ✔ সঠিক: Do you mind Tanvir's staying with us? (ব্যাখ্যা: Noun হলে apostrophe 's' যোগ করে possessive করতে হবে।)
- ৪.Formal vs. Informal English:
Spoken বা Casual English-এ অনেকেই me/him/them ব্যবহার করে কথা বলেন (যেমন: 'Do you mind me asking?'), কিন্তু Written English, Academic Writing, এবং যেকোনো competitive exam-এ অবশ্যই Possessive form ('Do you mind my asking?') ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
