Grammar Lesson: Verb + That-Clause#

আজকের ক্লাসে আমরা শিখব Verb + That-Clause-এর সঠিক ব্যবহার। Spoken English এবং IELTS/BCS Writing-এ এটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক।

১. That-Clause কী?#

সহজ কথায়, that-clause হলো এমন একটি dependent clause যা সাধারণত "that" দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং এর ভেতর একটি নিজস্ব Subject + Verb থাকে। এটি বাক্যে একটি noun-এর মতো কাজ করে (অর্থাৎ এটি মূলত Noun Clause)।

• Basic Structure: Subject + Verb + that + Subject + Verb

Example:

• I think that he is honest. (আমি মনে করি যে সে সৎ।)
• She believes that hard work pays off. (সে বিশ্বাস করে যে কঠোর পরিশ্রম ফল দেয়।)

Pro Tip: ইনফরমাল বা Spoken English-এ প্রায়ই that উহ্য (omit) রাখা হয়। যেমন: "I think he is honest."

২. কোন ধরনের Verb-এর পর That-Clause বসে?#

যেসব Verb দিয়ে আমরা আমাদের চিন্তা (thinking), অনুভূতি (feeling), বা কোনো তথ্য প্রকাশ (reporting) করি, সেগুলোর পর সাধারণত that-clause বসে:

• 1.Verbs of Thinking / Believing (চিন্তা ও বিশ্বাস):

• think, believe, know, realize, understand, hope, expect, assume
• Example: We hope (that) you will succeed. (আমরা আশা করি তুমি সফল হবে।)
• Example: I realized (that) it was a big mistake. (আমি বুঝতে পারলাম এটা একটা বড় ভুল ছিল।)

• 2.Verbs of Saying / Reporting (বলা বা বিবৃতি দেওয়া):

• say, explain, admit, suggest, promise, claim, agree
• Example: The teacher explained that practice makes a man perfect. (শিক্ষক ব্যাখ্যা করলেন যে অনুশীলনেই সাফল্য আসে।)
• Example: He admitted that he was wrong. (সে স্বীকার করল যে সে ভুল ছিল।)

৩. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম: Verb + Object + That-Clause#

কিছু কিছু Verb-এর ক্ষেত্রে 'that-clause' বসানোর আগে অবশ্যই একজন Object (ব্যক্তি) থাকতে হয়।

• Structure: Subject + Verb + Person/Object + that + Clause
• Common Verbs: tell, convince, remind, inform, warn

Examples:

• He told me that he was busy. (সে আমাকে বলেছিল যে সে ব্যস্ত ছিল।)
• Please remind him that the meeting starts at 4 PM. (দয়া করে তাকে মনে করিয়ে দিও যে মিটিং ৪টায় শুরু।)

৪. Bangladeshi Learners-দের সচরাচর ভুল (Common Mistakes)#

❌ ভুল: He told that he would come. ✔️ সঠিক: He said that he would come. অথবা He told me that he would come.

ব্যাখ্যা: 'Say'-এর পর সরাসরি that বসে, কিন্তু 'Tell'-এর পর কাকে বলা হচ্ছে (Object) তা উল্লেখ করতে হয়।

❌ ভুল: I think that she is go to market. ✔️ সঠিক: I think that she is going to the market.

ব্যাখ্যা: That-এর পর সম্পূর্ণ একটি সঠিক Tense মেনে বাক্য গঠন করতে হবে।

Answers:

• 1.I know (that) he is speaking the truth.
