Participial Adjectives

Participial Adjectives (পার্টিসিপিয়াল অ্যাডজেক্টিভ)

Use and distinguish -ed and -ing adjective forms.

Participial Adjectives কী?#

সহজ কথায়, যখন কোনো Verb-এর Participle form (Present Participle বা Past Participle) বাক্যে Noun বা Pronoun-কে describe করে অর্থাৎ Adjective হিসেবে কাজ করে, তখন তাকে Participial Adjective বলা হয়।

আমরা জানি Participle প্রধানত দুই ধরণের:

  • 1.Present Participle (-ing যুক্ত)
  • 2.Past Participle (-ed, -en, -d, -t যুক্ত)

১. Present Participial Adjectives (-ing form)#

যখন কোনো Verb-এর সাথে -ing যুক্ত হয়ে কোনো কিছুর বৈশিষ্ট্য বা কারণ (Active meaning) প্রকাশ করে।

  • নিয়ম: এটি সাধারণত বোঝায় "কোন জিনিসটা কেমন" বা "কে অনুভূতি তৈরি করছে"।
  • Examples:
  • This is an interesting book. (বইটি কেমন? আনন্দদায়ক বা চমৎকার।)
  • It was a boring lecture. (লেকচারটি বিরক্তিকর ছিল।)
  • Look at the flying bird. (উড়ন্ত পাখিটির দিকে তাকাও।)

২. Past Participial Adjectives (-ed / V3 form)#

যখন Verb-এর Past Participle form কোনো ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর অবস্থা (State/Feeling/Passive meaning) প্রকাশ করে।

  • নিয়ম: এটি সাধারণত বোঝায় "কে কেমন অনুভব করছে" বা "কার ওপর কাজটি হয়েছে"।
  • Examples:
  • I am bored. (আমি বিরক্ত বোধ করছি।)
  • Don't sit on the broken chair. (ভাঙা চেয়ারটায় বোসো না।)
  • The excited children were shouting. (উত্তেজিত বা আনন্দিত বাচ্চারা চিৎকার করছিল।)

Bangladeshi Learners-দের জন্য সবচেয়ে Common Mistake!#

অনেকেই বন্ধুদের বলতে গিয়ে বলে ফেলেন:

  • ❌ "I am boring today."
  • এর মানে দাঁড়ায়: "আমি আজ একজন বিরক্তিকর মানুষ!" (অন্যরা আপনাকে দেখে বিরক্ত হচ্ছে!)
  • ✔️ "I am bored today."
  • এর সঠিক মানে: "আমি আজ বোরিং ফিল করছি বা বিরক্ত বোধ করছি।"

সহজ টেকনিক:

  • -ing = যে অনুভূতিটা দেয় বা তৈরি করে (The cause: Boring, Shocking, Tiring)
  • -ed = যে অনুভূতিটা গ্রহণ করে বা ফিল করে (The receiver: Bored, Shocked, Tired)

কিছু জোড়ায় জোড়ায় উদাহরণ (Pair Comparison):#

  • 1.Tiring vs Tired:
  • The cricket match was tiring. (ম্যাচটি ক্লান্তিকর ছিল।)
  • Sakib was tired after the match. (ম্যাচ শেষে সাকিব ক্লান্ত ছিল।)
  • 2.Shocking vs Shocked:
  • It was shocking news. (এটি একটি মর্মান্তিক/স্তম্ভিত করার মতো খবর ছিল।)
  • We were shocked to hear the news. (খবরটি শুনে আমরা স্তব্ধ হয়ে গিয়েছিলাম।)
  • 3.Confusing vs Confused:
  • The English grammar rule is confusing. (নিয়মটি বিভ্রান্তিকর।)
  • The students are confused. (শিক্ষার্থীরা বিভ্রান্ত।)

Quick Practice (নিজেকে যাচাই করুন!):#

  • 1.She watched an (amazed / amazing) movie yesterday.
  • 2.The (frustrated / frustrating) customer lodged a complaint.

Answers: 1. amazing (মুভিটি কেমন ছিল) | 2. frustrated (কাস্টমার কেমন ফিল করছিলেন)
