Singular and Plural Nouns

হ্যালো learners! আজকের English Grammar lesson-এ আমরা খুব সহজ ও practical উপায়ে শিখবো Singular and Plural Nouns।

১. Basic Idea: Singular vs Plural কী?#

• Singular Noun: যখন কেবল একটি ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থান বোঝায়। (Example: A student, a phone, a rickshaw)
• Plural Noun: যখন একের অধিক (২ বা তার বেশি) ব্যক্তি, বস্তু বা স্থান বোঝায়। (Example: Students, phones, rickshaws)

২. Singular থেকে Plural করার Rules:#

Rule 1: সাধারণত Noun-এর শেষে ‘-s’ যোগ করে Plural করা হয়।#

• Book ➔ Books
• Pen ➔ Pens
• River ➔ Rivers
• Friend ➔ Friends

Rule 2: Noun-এর শেষে যদি s, ss, sh, ch (উচ্চারণ 'চ'-এর মতো), x, বা z থাকে, তবে ‘-es’ যোগ করতে হয়।#

• Bus ➔ Buses
• Class ➔ Classes
• Brush ➔ Brushes
• Match ➔ Matches
• Box ➔ Boxes

(Exception: 'ch'-এর উচ্চারণ যদি 'ক'-এর মতো হয়, তবে শুধু '-s' যোগ হয়; যেমন: Monarch ➔ Monarchs, Stomach ➔ Stomachs)

Rule 3: শব্দের শেষে ‘y’ থাকলে:#

• Consonant + y হলে ‘y’ উঠে গিয়ে ‘-ies’ বসে:
• Baby ➔ Babies
• City ➔ Cities
• Country ➔ Countries
• Vowel + y হলে ‘y’ পরিবর্তন হয় না, শুধু ‘-s’ যোগ হয়:
• Boy ➔ Boys
• Day ➔ Days
• Key ➔ Keys

Rule 4: শব্দের শেষে ‘f’ বা ‘fe’ থাকলে:#

অধিকাংশ ক্ষেত্রে ‘f’ বা ‘fe’ উঠে গিয়ে ‘-ves’ বসে:

• Leaf ➔ Leaves
• Knife ➔ Knives
• Thief ➔ Thieves
• Wife ➔ Wives

(Exceptions: Roof ➔ Roofs, Chief ➔ Chiefs, Cliff ➔ Cliffs)

Rule 5: Noun-এর শেষে ‘o’ থাকলে:#

• Consonant + o হলে সাধারণত ‘-es’ হয়:
• Mango ➔ Mangoes
• Hero ➔ Heroes
• Potato ➔ Potatoes

(Exceptions: Photo ➔ Photos, Piano ➔ Pianos)

• Vowel + o হলে শুধু ‘-s’ যোগ হয়:
• Radio ➔ Radios
• Zoo ➔ Zoos

Rule 6: Irregular Plurals (এদের কোনো নির্দিষ্ট নিয়ম নেই, মুখস্থ রাখতে হয়):#

• Man ➔ Men
• Woman ➔ Women (উচ্চারণ: উইমেন)
• Child ➔ Children
• Tooth ➔ Teeth
• Foot ➔ Feet
• Mouse ➔ Mice
• Person ➔ People

Rule 7: অপরিবর্তিত থাকে (Singular ও Plural একই রূপ):#

• Sheep ➔ Sheep
• Deer ➔ Deer
• Fish ➔ Fish
• Species ➔ Species

৩. Common Mistakes Bangladeshi Students Make:#

❌ I bought three furnitures. (ভুল! Furniture একটি Uncountable noun, এর plural হয় না) ✔ I bought three pieces of furniture.

❌ Childrens are playing in the field. (ভুল! Child-এর plural অলরেডি Children, এর সাথে 's' যোগ হবে না) ✔ Children are playing in the field.
