Adjective Complements

আজকে আমরা শিখবো English Grammar-এর একটি খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিন্তু সহজ টপিক—Adjective Complements। HSC, Admission Test কিংবা BCS পরীক্ষার জন্য এটি ভীষণ দরকারি।

১. Adjective Complement কী?#

সহজ কথায়, Adjective Complement হলো এমন একটি phrase বা clause, যা কোনো Adjective-এর অর্থকে সম্পূর্ণ (complete) করে।

অনেক সময় শুধু Adjective বললে বাক্যটির অর্থ অপূর্ণ থেকে যায়। যেমন:

• "I am afraid." (আমি ভীত—কিন্তু কীসের ভয়?)
• "I am afraid of dogs." (এখানে of dogs অংশটি 'afraid' Adjective-এর অর্থকে পূর্ণ করেছে। তাই এটি Adjective Complement।)

২. Adjective Complement কত প্রকার হতে পারে?#

Adjective Complement প্রধানত ৩ ভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়:

ক. Prepositional Phrase Complement#

Structure: Adjective + Preposition + Noun / Pronoun / Gerund (V+ing)

Examples:

• Rahim is good at English. ('good'-এর পর 'at English' বসেছে)
• She is interested in learning coding.
• They are tired of waiting.

খ. Infinitive Phrase Complement (to + Verb)#

Structure: Adjective + to + Base Verb (V1)

Examples:

• I am glad to meet you.
• It is difficult to solve this math.
• The students are eager to know their result.

গ. Noun Clause / That-Clause Complement#

Structure: Adjective + that + Subject + Verb (অনেক সময় 'that' উহ্য থাকতে পারে)

Examples:

• I am sure that he will succeed.
• We were surprised that Bangladesh won the match.
• She was worried that she might miss the train.

৩. চেনার সহজ টেকনিক (Hacks):#

Adjective-কে "কীসে?", "কেন?" বা "কী বিষয়ে?" প্রশ্ন করলে যে উত্তর পাওয়া যায়, সেটাই সাধারণত Adjective Complement।

• Example: Sadia is happy. ➡️ কেন happy? ➡️ *Sadia is happy to get GPA-5.* (Infinitive Complement)

নিচের বাক্যে Adjective Complement কোনটি চিহ্নিত করুন:

"The teacher was disappointed that only a few students submitted the homework."

উত্তর: এখানে Adjective হলো disappointed এবং Adjective Complement হলো that only a few students submitted the homework (একটি that-clause)।
