Would Rather and Would Prefer

আজকের লেসনে আমরা শিখব স্পোকেন ইংলিশ এবং বিসিএস/বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি পরীক্ষার জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দুটি Modal Phrase: 'Would Rather' এবং 'Would Prefer'।

দুটোর অর্থই মূলত এক—'বরং পছন্দ করা' বা 'অগ্রাধিকার দেওয়া' (Preference প্রকাশ করা)। কিন্তু এদের Sentence Structure এবং ব্যাকরণগত ব্যবহারে কিছু সুস্পষ্ট পার্থক্য রয়েছে।

১. Would Rather (বরং / অধিকতর পছন্দ করা)#

'Would rather'-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ হলো 'd rather (যেমন: I'd rather)। এর পর সবসময় Verb-এর Base Form (V1/Bare infinitive) বসে।

Rule A: নিজের পছন্দ প্রকাশ করতে (Present / Future)#

Structure: Subject + would rather + Verb (Base form) + than + Verb (Base form)

• Example 1: I would rather stay at home than go outside in this rain. (এই বৃষ্টির মধ্যে বাইরে যাওয়ার চেয়ে আমি বরং বাসায় থাকতেই পছন্দ করব।)
• Example 2: She would rather starve than beg. (সে বরং না খেয়ে থাকবে, তবু ভিক্ষা করবে না।)

মনে রাখবেন: Would rather-এর সাথে তুলনা বোঝাতে সর্বদা 'than' বসে ('to' নয়)।

Rule B: অন্য কেউ কিছু করুক তা চাইতে (Subjunctive Mood)#

আপনি যখন চান যে অন্য কেউ কাজটি করুক, তখন Subject-এর পর Past Simple tense (V2) ব্যবহৃত হয় (যদিও অর্থ Present বা Future বোঝায়)। Structure: Subject + would rather + Subject 2 + Past Simple (V2)

• Example 1: I would rather you didn't drive so fast. (আমি বরং চাই তুমি এতো দ্রুত গাড়ি না চালাও।)
• Example 2: She would rather he called her tonight. (সে বরং পছন্দ করবে যদি সে আজ রাতে তাকে কল দেয়।)

২. Would Prefer (অধিকতর পছন্দ করা)#

'Would prefer'-এর সংক্ষিপ্ত রূপ হলো 'd prefer। এর পর সবসময় 'to-infinitive' (to + V1) বসে।

Rule A: To-infinitive ব্যবহার করে#

Structure: Subject + would prefer + to + Verb (Base form) + rather than + Verb (Base form)

• Example 1: I would prefer to have tea rather than (have) coffee. (কফির চেয়ে আমি বরং চা খেতেই বেশি পছন্দ করব।)
• Example 2: They would prefer to walk rather than take a rickshaw. (রিকশায় যাওয়ার চেয়ে তারা বরং হেঁটে যেতে পছন্দ করবে।)

Rule B: Noun বা Gerund-এর সাথে#

Structure: Subject + would prefer + Noun + to / rather than + Noun

• Example: I would prefer juice to soft drinks. (সফট ড্রিংকসের চেয়ে আমি জুস পছন্দ করব।)

Rule C: অন্য কাউকে কোনো কাজ করার অনুরোধ করতে#

Structure: Subject + would prefer + Object + to + Verb (Base form)

• Example: I would prefer you not to talk loudly here. (আমি চাইব তুমি এখানে জোরে কথা না বলো।)

Key Differences (ঝটপট মনে রাখার নিয়ম):#

• 1.Verb Form:

• Would rather + Go (Bare infinitive / No 'to')
• Would prefer + To go (Infinitive / With 'to')

• 2.তুলনা (Comparison):

• Would rather ... than ...
• Would prefer ... rather than ... (বা Noun হলে 'to')

Common Mistakes (সাধারণ ভুলসমূহ):#

❌ Incorrect: I would rather to study English. ✔️ Correct: I would rather study English.

❌ Incorrect: I would prefer stay home than go out. ✔️ Correct: I would prefer to stay home rather than go out.

❌ Incorrect: I would rather you don't smoke. ✔️ Correct: I would rather you didn't smoke.
