Reported Questions (Indirect Speech for Questions)#

English Grammar-এর একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং একটু tricky টপিক হলো Reported Questions (যাকে আমরা Narration Change of Interrogative Sentences হিসেবেও চিনি)। SSC, HSC, Admission Test, IELTS বা দৈনন্দিন স্পোকেন ইংলিশ—সব জায়গাতেই এটি খুব কাজে লাগে।

চলুন একদম সহজ বাংলায় নিয়মগুলো বুঝে নেই!

Reported Question আসলে কী?#

কেউ আপনাকে সরাসরি কোনো প্রশ্ন করলে সেটা Direct Question। যেমন:

Rahim: "Where do you live?"

আর যখন আপনি এই কথাটা অন্য কাউকে গিয়ে বলবেন, সেটা হবে Reported Question:

Rahim asked me where I lived.

গোল্ডেন রুলস (Golden Rules)#

১. বাক্যটি আর 'প্রশ্ন' থাকে না (Statement হয়ে যায়)#

সবচেয়ে কমন ভুল যেটা আমরা করি—Reported Speech-এ প্রশ্নবোধক ভাব বজায় রাখা। মনে রাখবেন:

• Reported Question-এ Word order হবে: Subject + Verb (Auxiliary Verb আগে আসবে না)।
• শেষে কখনো Question mark (?) বসবে না, সব সময় Full stop (.) বসবে।

২. Reporting Verb পরিবর্তন#

Said বা Said to-এর জায়গায় সাধারণত বসে:

• asked
• wanted to know
• inquired of

৩. 'That' বসবে না#

Assertive sentence-এ আমরা কমা তুলে that বসাই, কিন্তু Reported Question-এ কখনো `that` বসবে না।

প্রশ্ন দুই ধরণের হয়:#

Type A: Yes/No Questions (যে প্রশ্নের উত্তর Yes বা No দিয়ে দেওয়া যায়)#

যেসব প্রশ্ন Auxiliary Verb (Am, Is, Are, Was, Were, Do, Does, Did, Have, Has, Can, Will ইত্যাদি) দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

রুল: Linking word হিসেবে if অথবা whether বসবে।

• Structure: Reporting subject + asked + (object) + if/whether + Subject + Verb + Extensions.

Examples:

• 1.Direct: He said to me, "Are you coming tomorrow?"

Reported: He asked me if I was coming the next day. (লক্ষ্য করুন: 'are you' উল্টে গিয়ে 'I was' হয়েছে, tense past হয়েছে এবং tomorrow পরিবর্তন হয়ে the next day হয়েছে।)

• 2.Direct: She said, "Do you like coffee?"

Reported: She asked if I liked coffee. (Do/Does বাদ হয়ে যাবে, মূল verb-এর Past form বসবে।)

Type B: Wh- Questions (What, Where, Why, When, Who, Which, How)#

যেসব প্রশ্ন Wh-word দিয়ে শুরু হয়, সেগুলোতে if বা whether বসে না। Wh-word-টি নিজেই বসে যায়।

রুল: Wh-word + Subject + Verb.

Examples:

• 1.Direct: Teacher said, "What is your name?"

Reported: Teacher asked what my name was. (Wrong: Teacher asked what was my name? ❌)

• 2.Direct: Father said to him, "Where did you go?"

Reported: Father asked him where he had gone. (Did থাকায় বাক্যটি Past Indefinite, তাই Reported Speech-এ Past Perfect 'had gone' হয়েছে।)

• 3.Direct: My friend asked, "How can I help you?"

Reported: My friend asked how he/she could help me.

Tense পরিবর্তনের নিয়ম (Quick Recap)#

Reporting verb যদি Past Tense-এ থাকে (said/asked):

• Present Indefinite ➔ Past Indefinite
• Present Continuous ➔ Past Continuous
• Present Perfect ➔ Past Perfect
• Past Indefinite ➔ Past Perfect
• Can ➔ Could, Will ➔ Would, May ➔ Might

সাধারণ কিছু ভুল যা আমরা প্রায়ই করি (Common Mistakes)#

❌ ভুল: He asked me that where I was going. ✔️ সঠিক: He asked me where I was going. (that এবং where একসাথে বসে না)

❌ ভুল: She asked me where do I live? ✔️ সঠিক: She asked me where I lived. (প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন হবে না, do বাদ যাবে)

❌ ভুল: Mother asked if was I hungry. ✔️ সঠিক: Mother asked if I was hungry. (Subject আগে, Verb পরে)
