Reported Statements

Reported Statements (Direct to Indirect Speech)

Report statements with suitable reporting verbs and clause structures.

আজকে আমরা শিখবো Grammar-এর খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক—Reported Statements (Direct to Indirect Speech for Assertive Sentences)। দৈনন্দিন English conversation কিংবা BCS, HSC, Admission test—সব জায়গাতেই এটা কাজে লাগে।

১. Reported Speech / Statement কী?#

কারো মুখের হুবহু কথাটি ইনভার্টেড কমা (" ") দিয়ে প্রকাশ করাকে বলে Direct Speech। আর সেই কথাটি নিজের ভাষায় অন্য কাউকে বলাই হলো Indirect Speech বা Reported Statement।

  • Direct: Rahim said, "I am learning English."
  • Indirect: Rahim said that he was learning English.

২. Direct থেকে Indirect করার ৫টি গোল্ডেন রুলস (Golden Rules)#

রুল ১: Reporting Verb-এর পরিবর্তন#

  • Direct-এ শুধু said থাকলে Indirect-এ said-ই থাকবে।
  • তবে said to + Object থাকলে Indirect করার সময় তা told + Object হয়ে যাবে।
  • Direct: He said to me, ...
  • Indirect: He told me that ...

রুল ২: Inverted Comma তুলে দেওয়া#

Assertive sentence বা statement-এর ক্ষেত্রে ইনভার্টেড কমা (" ") উঠে গিয়ে Conjunction হিসেবে `that` বসে।

রুল ৩: Pronoun Change (ব্যক্তি বা Person পরিবর্তন)#

এটি মনে রাখার সহজ নিয়ম হলো SON Formula:

  • S (Subject): First Person (I, we, my, us) পরিবর্তন হবে Reporting verb-এর Subject অনুযায়ী।
  • O (Object): Second Person (you, your) পরিবর্তন হবে Reporting verb-এর Object অনুযায়ী।
  • N (No change): Third Person (he, she, it, they, Rahim) পরিবর্তন হবে না।

রুল ৪: Tense-এর ব্যাকশিফট (Tense Backshift)#

Reporting verb যদি Past Tense (যেমন: said বা told) হয়, তবে রিপোর্টেড স্পিচের Tense এক ধাপ অতীতে পিছিয়ে যাবে:

  • Present Indefinite $\rightarrow$ Past Indefinite
  • Direct: "I write a letter."
  • Indirect: He said that he wrote a letter.
  • Present Continuous $\rightarrow$ Past Continuous
  • Direct: "I am eating rice."
  • Indirect: She said that she was eating rice.
  • Present Perfect $\rightarrow$ Past Perfect
  • Direct: "I have finished the work."
  • Indirect: He told me that he had finished the work.
  • Past Indefinite $\rightarrow$ Past Perfect
  • Direct: "I bought a phone."
  • Indirect: He said that he had bought a phone.
  • Modal Verbs:
  • can $\rightarrow$ could
  • may $\rightarrow$ might
  • will/shall $\rightarrow$ would

রুল ৫: Time & Place Words পরিবর্তন (নৈকট্যসূচক থেকে দূরত্বসূচক)#

  • now $\rightarrow$ then
  • today $\rightarrow$ that day
  • tomorrow $\rightarrow$ the next day / the following day
  • yesterday $\rightarrow$ the previous day
  • this $\rightarrow$ that
  • here $\rightarrow$ there
  • ago $\rightarrow$ before

৩. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যতিক্রম (Universal Truth / চিরন্তন সত্য)#

যদি Reported Speech-এর বক্তব্যটি কোনো Universal Truth (চিরন্তন সত্য), Habitual Fact (অভ্যাসগত সত্য) বা Scientific Fact হয়, তবে Reporting Verb অতীতে থাকলেও Tense-এর কোনো পরিবর্তন হবে না।

  • Direct: The teacher said, "The earth moves round the sun."
  • Indirect: The teacher said that the earth moves round the sun. (moved হবে না)

৪. কিছু বাস্তব উদাহরণ (Examples):#

  • 1.Direct: Tanvir said, "I will call you tomorrow."
  • Indirect: Tanvir said that he would call me the next day.
  • 2.Direct: Rina said to Sumon, "I don't like fast food."
  • Indirect: Rina told Sumon that she didn't like fast food.
  • 3.Direct: Father said, "Honesty is the best policy."
  • Indirect: Father said that honesty is the best policy. (Universal truth)
