Passive with Reporting Verbs

আজকের লেসনে আমরা শিখব Reporting Verbs (যেমন: say, believe, think, know, claim, expect, report, consider ইত্যাদি) দিয়ে কীভাবে Passive Voice গঠন করতে হয়। সাধারণত News report, Formal writing এবং সাধারণ মানুষের বিশ্বাস বা মতামত প্রকাশ করার জন্য এই ধরনের প্যাসিভ স্ট্রাকচার প্রচুর ব্যবহৃত হয়।

যেমন বাংলায় আমরা বলি: "শোনা যায় যে তিনি খুব ধনী" বা "লোকজন বলে যে বাড়িটি ভুতুড়ে।"

এই ধরনের বাক্যকে ইংরেজিতে Active থেকে Passive করার ২টি প্রধান নিয়ম (Structures) রয়েছে:

Structure 1: "It + Passive Verb + that-clause"#

এটি সবচেয়ে সহজ পদ্ধতি। এখানে 'It' কে Dummy Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• Pattern: It + be verb + V3 (Reporting Verb) + that + বাকি অংশ।

উদাহরণ:

• Active: People say that he is honest. Passive: It is said that he is honest. (বলা হয়ে থাকে যে তিনি সৎ।)
• Active: People believe that the criminal has fled. Passive: It is believed that the criminal has fled.
• Active: They reported that the price of eggs increased. Passive: It was reported that the price of eggs increased. (Past tense হলে 'was/were' হবে)

Structure 2: "Subject + Passive Verb + to-infinitive"#

এই স্ট্রাকচারটি একটু বেশি Advanced এবং Formal/IELTS-এর ক্ষেত্রে খুব জনপ্রিয়। এখানে 'that'-এর পরের Subject-কে বাক্যের শুরুতে নিয়ে আসতে হয়।

• Pattern: 1. একই সময় বা বর্তমান/ভবিষ্যতের কথা বোঝাতে: Subject + be verb + V3 + to + Base Form (V1) 2. অতীতের কোনো ঘটনা বোঝাতে (Perfect Infinitive): Subject + be verb + V3 + to have + V3

উদাহরণ ১ (Present / General Fact):

• Active: People say that he is a genius. Passive: He is said to be a genius.
• Active: People think that the project will succeed. Passive: The project is thought to succeed.

উদাহরণ ২ (Past Action / Perfect Infinitive):

• Active: People believe that he stole the money. Passive: He is believed to have stolen the money. (বিশ্বাস করা হয় যে সে টাকা চুরি করেছিল।)
• Active: They say the thief escaped last night. Passive: The thief is said to have escaped last night.

Common Reporting Verbs লিস্ট:#

• Believe (It is believed that... / He is believed to...)
• Consider (He is considered to be...)
• Think (She is thought to be...)
• Know (He is known to be a doctor.)
• Expect (The train is expected to arrive at 5 PM.)
• Claim (He is claimed to have invented this.)

• 1.Active: People know that Bangladesh is a beautiful country.

-> Passive 1: It is known that Bangladesh is a beautiful country. -> Passive 2: Bangladesh is known to be a beautiful country.

• 2.Active: Police report that two men robbed the bank.

-> Passive: Two men are reported to have robbed the bank.
