Tense Backshift in Reported Speech

Reported Speech বা Indirect Speech করার সময় সবচেয়ে কমন এবং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম হলো 'Tense Backshift'। সহজে বলতে গেলে, অতীতে বলা কোনো কথা যখন আমরা আরেকজনকে বলি, তখন ভেতরের কথাটাও অতীতে (one step back into the past) নিয়ে যেতে হয়।

• ১.মূল নিয়ম (The Golden Rule):

Reporting Verb যদি Past Tense (যেমন: said, told, asked) হয়, তবেই ভেতরের Reported Clause-এর Tense ব্যাকশিফট হবে।

*সতর্কতা: Reporting Verb যদি Present (says) বা Future (will say) হয়, তবে কিন্তু Tense ব্যাকশিফট হবে না!

• Direct: He says, "I am happy."
• Indirect: He says that he is happy. (No change)

• ২.Tense কীভাবে পরিবর্তন হয় (The Backshift Chart):

• Simple Present ➔ Simple Past

• Direct: She said, "I work in Dhaka."
• Indirect: She said that she worked in Dhaka.

• Present Continuous ➔ Past Continuous

• Direct: Rahul said, "I am reading a book."
• Indirect: Rahul said that he was reading a book.

• Present Perfect ➔ Past Perfect

• Direct: He said, "I have passed the exam."
• Indirect: He said that he had passed the exam.

• Simple Past ➔ Past Perfect (Past Tense থাকলে আরও অতীতে গিয়ে Past Perfect হয়ে যায়)

• Direct: Mim said, "I bought a phone."
• Indirect: Mim said that she had bought a phone.

• Past Continuous ➔ Past Perfect Continuous

• Direct: They said, "We were playing football."
• Indirect: They said that they had been playing football.

• Modal Verbs-এর পরিবর্তন:

• will ➔ would
• can ➔ could
• may ➔ might
• must ➔ had to

(Note: would, could, should, might থাকলে কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না।)

• ৩.ব্যতিক্রম (Exceptions - যেখানে Backshift হয় না):

(ক) Universal Truth (চিরন্তন সত্য) বা Scientific Fact হলে:

• Direct: The teacher said, "The earth moves around the sun."
• Indirect: The teacher said that the earth moves around the sun. (moved হবে না)

(খ) Habitual Fact (নিয়মিত অভ্যাস) বোঝালে:

• Direct: He said, "I wake up early every morning."
• Indirect: He said that he wakes up early every morning.

• ৪.Bangladeshi Students-দের জন্য Quick Pro-Tip:

HSC বা Admission/BCS পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি ভুল হয় 'Simple Past' কে 'Past Perfect' এ পরিবর্তন না করায়। মনে রাখবেন: Direct speech-এ 'did/went/saw' থাকলে Indirect-এ 'had done/had gone/had seen' বসাতে হবে।
