Grammar Lesson: Substitution (সাবস্টিটিউশন)#

English-এ কথা বলার সময় বা লেখার সময় বারবার একই শব্দ (word) repeat করলে বাক্যটি শুনতে বা পড়তে বিরক্তিকর লাগে। এই repetition বা পুনরাবৃত্তি এড়াতে একটি শব্দের জায়গায় অন্য একটি dummy/substitute শব্দ ব্যবহার করার প্রক্রিয়াকে Substitution বলে।

চলেন সহজে বুঝে নিই কীভাবে বিভিন্ন ধরনের Substitution কাজ করে:

১. Nominal Substitution (Noun-এর পরিবর্তে One / Ones)#

যখন কোনো singular বা plural countable noun-কে বারবার উল্লেখ না করে সংক্ষেপে বলতে চাই, তখন আমরা one (singular) অথবা ones (plural) ব্যবহার করি।

• One (Singular এর জন্য):
• Incorrect/Repetitive: "I don't like this red pen. Give me the blue pen."
• Better: "I don't like this red pen. Give me the blue one." (এখানে 'pen' এর বদলে 'one' বসেছে)

• Ones (Plural এর জন্য):
• Incorrect/Repetitive: "These green mangoes are sour. Please give me the yellow mangoes."
• Better: "These green mangoes are sour. Please give me the sweet ones."

২. Verbal Substitution (Verb-এর পরিবর্তে Do / Does / Did)#

ক্রিয়া বা Verb-এর পুনরাবৃত্তি এড়াতে auxiliary verb do, does, did ইত্যাদি ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• Example 1:
• "Do you like playing cricket?"
• "Yes, I do." (পুরোটা "Yes, I like playing cricket" না বলে শুধু 'do' দিয়ে বোঝানো হয়েছে)

• Example 2:
• "Tarek scored good marks in the exam, and so did Rahim." (Rahim also scored good marks না বলে 'did' দিয়ে কাজ চালানো হয়েছে)

৩. Clausal Substitution (পুরো Clause-এর পরিবর্তে So / Not)#

পুরো একটি sentence বা idea repeat না করে আমরা So (affirmative-এ) এবং Not (negative-এ) ব্যবহার করি। বিশেষ করে think, believe, hope, suppose, expect verb গুলোর সাথে এটি খুব জনপ্রিয়।

• So (হ্যাঁ-বোধক বোঝাতে):
• A: "Will it rain today?"
• B: "I think so." (I think it will rain today-এর বদলে 'so')

• Not (না-বোধক বোঝাতে):
• A: "Is Bangladesh going to lose the match?"
• B: "I hope not!" (I hope Bangladesh is not going to lose...)

৪. The Same (একই জিনিস বোঝাতে)#

কোনো কিছু হুবহু আগেরটির মতো চাইলে বা ঘটলে 'The Same' ব্যবহার করা যায়।

• Example:
• Customer: "I'll have a cup of milk tea."
• Friend: "I'll have the same, please." (পুরো অর্ডার repeat করতে হলো না)
