Shorten some relative clauses using participles and other structures.
Grammar Lesson: Reduced Relative Clauses (সহজ বাংলায়)#
English writing বা speaking-এ স্মার্ট আর concise (সংক্ষেপিত) হওয়ার জন্য Reduced Relative Clause খুব জনপ্রিয় এবং গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক। BCS, Bank Exam, IELTS এমনকি দৈনিক conversational English-এ এটা প্রচুর ব্যবহার হয়।
১. Relative Clause কী এবং কেন Reduce করি?#
একটি Relative Clause সাধারণত who, which, that দিয়ে শুরু হয়ে কোনো noun বা pronoun-কে modify করে বা অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেয়।
- Full Clause: *The boy who is playing in the field is my brother.*
- Reduced Clause: *The boy playing in the field is my brother.*
খেয়াল করুন, দ্বিতীয় বাক্যে অর্থ একই রয়ে গেছে, কিন্তু who is বাদ দিয়ে বাক্যটিকে আরও crisp ও smart করা হয়েছে। একেই বলে Reduction।
২. Reduction করার প্রধান নিয়মগুলো (Rules):#
Rule 1: Active Voice হলে (Present Participle / V-ing)#
বাক্যটি যদি active voice-এ থাকে, তাহলে Relative Pronoun (who/which/that) এবং auxiliary verb (am/is/are/was/were) বাদ যাবে এবং মূল verb-টি V-ing ফর্মে রূপ নেবে।
- Full: Do you know the girl who is singing Tagore songs?
- Reduced: Do you know the girl singing Tagore songs?
- Full: Cars that run on CNG cause less pollution.
- Reduced: Cars running on CNG cause less pollution. (এখানে verb 'run' পরিবর্তিত হয়ে 'running' হয়েছে)
Rule 2: Passive Voice হলে (Past Participle / V3)#
বাক্যটি যদি passive voice-এ থাকে, তবে Relative Pronoun এবং be verb বাদ যাবে, শুধু মূল verb-এর Past Participle (V3) রূপটি থাকবে।
- Full: The bridge which was built over the Padma river is a mega project.
- Reduced: The bridge built over the Padma river is a mega project.
- Full: Any student who is caught cheating will be expelled.
- Reduced: Any student caught cheating will be expelled.
Rule 3: Be-Verb + Adjective বা Prepositional Phrase থাকলে#
অনেক সময় relative clause-এর ভেতর শুধু prepositional phrase বা adjective থাকে। সেক্ষেত্রে pronoun এবং be-verb দুটোই উঠে যায়।
- Full: The bags that are on the table belong to Tanvir.
- Reduced: The bags on the table belong to Tanvir. (Prepositional Phrase)
- Full: People who are eligible can apply for the job.
- Reduced: People eligible can apply for the job. (Adjective Phrase)
Rule 4: 'To + Verb' (Infinitive) ব্যবহার করে#
বাক্যে the first, the second, the last, the only, কিংবা superlative degree (the best) থাকলে relative clause-কে to + base verb দিয়ে reduce করা যায়।
- Full: Neil Armstrong was the first man who stepped on the moon.
- Reduced: Neil Armstrong was the first man to step on the moon.
- Full: He was the only person who supported me.
- Reduced: He was the only person to support me.
৩. কখন Clause Reduce করা যাবে না? (Caution!)#
- 1.Object Relative Clause হলে:
- যখন pronoun-টি subject না হয়ে object হিসেবে কাজ করে, তখন participle দিয়ে reduce করা যায় না।
- ভুল: The man whom I saw yesterday coming again. ❌
- সঠিক: The man I saw yesterday is coming again. ✔️ (এখানে pronoun 'whom' ড্রপ করা যায়, কিন্তু verb পরিবর্তন করা যায় না)
- 2.Tense / Meaning অস্পষ্ট হয়ে যাওয়ার ঝুঁকি থাকলে:
- যদি clause reduce করলে সময়ের হিসাব (Past, Present, Future) এলোমেলো হয়ে যাওয়ার সম্ভাবনা থাকে, তবে full clause ব্যবহার করাই ভালো।
৪. Quick Practice (নিজেকে যাচাই করুন)#
১. Convert to Reduced Clause:
- "The products which are imported from China are cheaper."
- 👉 Answer: *"The products imported from China are cheaper."*
২. Convert to Reduced Clause:
- "Passengers who are waiting for the flight should proceed to Gate 4."
- 👉 Answer: *"Passengers waiting for the flight should proceed to Gate 4."*
