Embedded Questions

Embedded Questions কী?#

সহজ ভাষায়, যখন একটি প্রশ্ন সরাসরি না করে অন্য কোনো সেন্টেন্স বা বড় কোনো প্রশ্নের ভেতরে যুক্ত (embed) করে দেওয়া হয়, তখন তাকে Embedded Question বলা হয়।

আমরা সাধারণত কাউকে বেশি বিনয়ী (polite) বা ফরমাল ভঙ্গিতে প্রশ্ন করতে কিংবা কোনো কিছু না জানার কথা প্রকাশ করতে Embedded Questions ব্যবহার করি।

গোল্ডেন রুল (The Golden Rule)#

সাধারণ ডিরেক্ট প্রশ্নে (Direct Question) অক্সিলারি ভার্ব সাবজেক্টের আগে বসে:

• Direct Question: Verb + Subject
• Where is the station?

কিন্তু যখনই প্রশ্নটি Embedded Question হয়ে যাবে, তখন তার ভেতরের স্ট্রাকচারটি আর প্রশ্নবোধক থাকবে না; সেটি Assertive বা Statement ফরম্যাটে (Subject + Verb) চলে আসবে:

• Embedded Question: Introductory Phrase + Question word/If + Subject + Verb
• Can you tell me where the station is? (ভুল: Can you tell me where is the station?)

২টি প্রধান স্ট্রাকচার:#

১. Wh-Questions দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া প্রশ্ন:#

• Direct: Where does he live?
• Embedded: Do you know where he lives?

(খেয়াল করুন: 'does' উঠে গিয়ে মূল ভার্ব 'lives' হয়েছে, কারণ এটি এখন Assertive অর্ডারে।)

• Direct: What time does the class start?
• Embedded: I don’t know what time the class starts.

২. Yes/No Questions (যেগুলোর উত্তর Yes বা No দিয়ে দেওয়া যায়):#

Yes/No প্রশ্নকে embed করতে হলে if অথবা whether ব্যবহার করতে হবে।

• Direct: Is he coming today?
• Embedded: Could you tell me if he is coming today?

• Direct: Did they finish the project?
• Embedded: I wonder whether they finished the project.

বহুল ব্যবহৃত Introductory Phrases:#

• Could you tell me...?
• Do you know...?
• I’d like to know...
• I wonder...
• I’m not sure...
• Do you have any idea...?

সবচেয়ে সাধারণ ভুল (Common Mistakes to Avoid):#

❌ ভুল: Can you tell me where did she go? ✔️ সঠিক: Can you tell me where she went? (Past indefinite টেন্স অনুযায়ী subject + V2)

❌ ভুল: I don't know what is your name. ✔️ সঠিক: I don't know what your name is.

❌ ভুল: Do you know who is that boy? ✔️ সঠিক: Do you know who that boy is?#

পরীক্ষার প্রস্তুতি (BCS / Job / Admission Test Example):#

Question: Choose the correct sentence: A) I wonder why did he say that. B) I wonder why he did say that. C) I wonder why he said that. D) I wonder why did he said that.

👉 সঠিক উত্তর: C (কারণ 'why'-এর পর Subject 'he' এবং Past Form 'said' বসেছে, কোনো অতিরিক্ত auxiliary 'did' বসেনি)।
