Prepositional Phrases (প্রিপজিশনাল ফ্রেজ)
Use preposition-led phrases as modifiers and complements.
আজকের Grammar Lesson-এ আমরা শিখবো Prepositional Phrase কী, এটা বাক্যে কীভাবে কাজ করে এবং কীভাবে সহজে চেনা যায়।
১. Prepositional Phrase কী? (Definition)#
Prepositional Phrase হলো এমন একটি শব্দগুচ্ছ (group of words), যা একটি Preposition দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং এর পেছনে একটি Noun, Pronoun বা Noun Phrase (যাকে Object of Preposition বলা হয়) যুক্ত থাকে।
সহজ Structure:
Preposition + Modifier (optional) + Object (Noun/Pronoun)
উদাহরণ:
- in the room (in = preposition, the room = noun phrase)
- with them (with = preposition, them = pronoun)
- under the big tree (under = preposition, the big tree = noun phrase)
২. বাক্যে Prepositional Phrase-এর ভূমিকা (Functions)#
ইংরেজিতে Prepositional Phrase সাধারণত দুটি প্রধান কাজ করে:
ক. Adjective হিসেবে (Adjectival Phrase):#
যখন এটি কোনো Noun বা Pronoun সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেয় (কোনটি/Which one নির্দেশ করে)।
- Example: The book on the table is mine.
- এখানে on the table বলছে কোন বইটির কথা বলা হচ্ছে। তাই এটি Adjective-এর মতো কাজ করছে।
- Example: The girl with red hair is my sister.
খ. Adverb হিসেবে (Adverbial Phrase):#
যখন এটি কোনো Verb, Adjective বা অন্য কোনো Adverb সম্পর্কে তথ্য দেয় (কখন/When, কোথায়/Where, কীভাবে/How নির্দেশ করে)।
- Example: We live in Dhaka.
- কোথায় বাস করি? in Dhaka (Place/স্থান বোঝাচ্ছে)।
- Example: The class starts at 9:00 AM.
- কখন শুরু হয়? at 9:00 AM (Time/সময় বোঝাচ্ছে)।
- Example: He speaks with confidence.
- কীভাবে কথা বলে? with confidence (Manner/পদ্ধতি বোঝাচ্ছে)।
৩. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কিছু নিয়ম (Crucial Rules for Bangladeshi Learners)#
- 1.Preposition-এর পর Object Form বসে:
Prepositional phrase-এ Pronoun থাকলে সবসময় Objective form বসবে (me, him, her, us, them)।
- Incorrect: This gift is for he.
- Correct: *This gift is for him.*
- 2.কোনো Subject বা Verb থাকে না:
মনে রাখবেন, একটি Prepositional Phrase-এর ভেতরে নিজস্ব কোনো Subject বা Finite Verb থাকে না। তাই এটি কখনোই পূর্ণাঙ্গ বাক্য (Complete Sentence) হতে পারে না।
- 3.Subject-Verb Agreement-এ বিভ্রান্ত হবেন না:
অনেক সময় Subject এবং Verb-এর মাঝে Prepositional Phrase ঢুকে পড়লে আমরা ভুল Verb বেছে নিই।
- Incorrect: The box of chocolates are heavy.
- Correct: *The box [of chocolates] is heavy.* (এখানে আসল Subject হলো 'The box', তাই Verb হবে 'is')।
৪. Quick Practice (নিজেকে যাচাই করুন)#
নিচের বাক্যগুলোতে Prepositional Phrase খুঁজে বের করুন:
- 1.He is sleeping under the fan.
- 2.The boy in the blue shirt is my cousin.
