🎯 Sentence Correction Masterclass (BCS, Bank & Admission Special)#

English Grammar-এর অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং tricky টপিক হলো Sentence Correction। বিভিন্ন competitive exam (যেমন: BCS, Bank Job, DU Admission)-এ প্রায়ই এমন কিছু প্রশ্ন আসে যেখানে বাহ্যিক দৃষ্টিতে বাক্যটি সঠিক মনে হলেও ভেতরে subtle grammatical errors থাকে।

চলুন আজকে আমরা বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীদের করা সবচেয়ে কমন কিছু ভুল এবং সেগুলোর সঠিক নিয়ম শিখে নিই (Bengali-English Mixed Explanation):

১. Subject-Verb Agreement (One of the + Plural Noun + Singular Verb)#

• Incorrect: One of my friends are going to Canada.
• Correct: One of my friends is going to Canada.
• Explanation: 'One of the' এর পর noun/pronoun সবসময় plural হয় (friends), কিন্তু subject হিসেবে মূল focus থাকে 'One'-এর ওপর, তাই verb সবসময় singular (is/was/has) হবে।

২. Redundancy (অতিরিক্ত শব্দের অপ্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবহার)#

আমরা বাংলায় কথা বলার অভ্যাসবশত ইংরেজিতে একই অর্থ বহনকারী দুটি শব্দ একসাথে ব্যবহার করে ফেলি।

• Incorrect: Please return back the book tomorrow.
• Correct: Please return the book tomorrow. (কারণ 'return' মানেই 'give back')
• Incorrect: He is my cousin brother.
• Correct: He is my cousin. (English-এ cousin brother/sister বলা সম্পূর্ণ ভুল, শুধু 'cousin' বলতে হবে)
• Incorrect: Discuss about the matter.
• Correct: Discuss the matter. (Discuss-এর পর preposition 'about' বসে না)

৩. Dangling Modifiers (ঝুলন্ত বা ভুল নির্দেশক)#

Sentence-এ modifier যেন তার উপযুক্ত subject-কে modify করে, সেদিকে লক্ষ্য রাখতে হবে।

• Incorrect: Walking on the road, a snake bit him.
• Correct: While he was walking on the road, a snake bit him. / Walking on the road, he was bitten by a snake.
• Explanation: প্রথম বাক্যে মনে হচ্ছে 'snake' বা সাপটি রাস্তায় হাঁটছিল! তাই modifier-এর সাথে সঠিক subject match করাতে হবে।

৪. Parallelism (সমান্তরাল গঠন)#

একটি বাক্যে 'and', 'or', 'but' দিয়ে যুক্ত থাকা items গুলোর grammatical structure একই রকম হতে হবে।

• Incorrect: She likes singing, dancing, and to swim.
• Correct: She likes singing, dancing, and swimming.
• Explanation: Gerund (V+ing) দিয়ে শুরু হলে বাকিগুলোও Gerund হবে; Infinitive (to+V1) দিয়ে শুরু হলে বাকিগুলোও Infinitive হবে।

৫. Conditional Sentences Error#

• Incorrect: If I would have known, I would have told you.
• Correct: If I had known, I would have told you.
• Explanation: 3rd Conditional-এর 'If-clause'-এ কখনো 'would have' বসে না; গঠন হবে: If + Past Perfect (had + V3), Subject + would have + V3।

Question 1: Incorrect: Neither the teacher nor the students was present. Correction: Neither the teacher nor the students were present. (নিয়ম: Neither...nor থাকলে verb-এর সবচেয়ে কাছের subject অনুযায়ী verb নির্ধারিত হয়। এখানে 'students' plural, তাই 'were' হবে।)

Question 2: Incorrect: He prevented me to go there. Correction: He prevented me from going there. (নিয়ম: Prevent + Object + from + Verb-ing)
