Common Subject-Verb Agreement Errors (Bangla-English Mixed Guide)
Correct agreement errors in simple and complex sentences.
Subject-Verb Agreement হলো ইংরেজি গ্রামারের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি নিয়ম। সহজ ভাষায়: Subject singular হলে Verb singular হবে, আর Subject plural হলে Verb plural হবে।
আমরা যারা বাংলাদেশি লার্নার্স, তারা প্রায়ই বাংলায় চিন্তা করে ইংরেজিতে লিখতে বা বলতে গিয়ে কিছু কমন ভুল করে ফেলি। নিচে সবচেয়ে কমন ভুলগুলো এবং সেগুলোর সঠিক নিয়ম আলোচনা করা হলো:
১. Third Person Singular Number-এ 's/es' মিস করা#
বাংলা ব্যাকরণে Subject singular নাকি plural তার জন্য ক্রিয়ার শেষে 's' যোগ করার কোনো নিয়ম নেই। তাই আমরা প্রায়ই 's/es' দিতে ভুলে যাই।
- ❌ Incorrect: He go to university every day.
- Correct: He goes to university every day.
- 💡 Rule: Present Indefinite tense-এ Subject যদি Third Person Singular (He, She, It, Rahim) হয়, তবে verb-এর শেষে অবশ্যই s/es বসবে।
২. 'One of the + Plural Noun'-এর ভুল ব্যবহার#
আমরা অনেকেই Noun plural দেখে Verb-ও plural বসিয়ে দিই। কিন্তু এখানে আসল Subject কিন্তু 'One', বাকিরা নয়!
- ❌ Incorrect: One of my friends are going to Canada.
- Correct: One of my friends is going to Canada.
- 💡 Rule: 'One of the...' এর পর Noun plural হলেও Verb সবসময় Singular হবে।
৩. Everyone, Everybody, Each, Nobody-এর ব্যবহার#
বাংলায় 'সবাই' শুনলে plural মনে হয়, কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে এই Indefinite Pronoun-গুলো গ্রামাটিক্যালি Singular হিসেবে গণ্য হয়।
- ❌ Incorrect: Everyone are ready for the BCS exam.
- Correct: Everyone is ready for the BCS exam.
- ❌ Incorrect: Each of the students have submitted the assignment.
- Correct: Each of the students has submitted the assignment.
- 💡 Rule: Everyone, Everybody, Each, Someone, Nobody ইত্যাদির পর Verb সবসময় Singular হয়।
৪. 'As well as', 'Along with', 'Together with'-এর নিয়ম#
বাংলায় 'এবং' বা 'সাথে' বোঝাতে আমরা এগুলো ব্যবহার করি এবং দুইজনকে একসাথে হিসাব করে verb plural বানিয়ে ফেলি। কিন্তু নিয়ম অনুযায়ী Verb প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয়।
- ❌ Incorrect: The teacher along with his students were present.
- Correct: The teacher along with his students was present.
- 💡 Rule: As well as, along with, accompanied by, together with থাকলে Verb সবসময় ১ম Subject অনুযায়ী বসে।
৫. 'Either...or' এবং 'Neither...nor'-এর খেলা#
এই ধরনের Conjunction থাকলে Verb কার সাথে মিলবে?
- ❌ Incorrect: Neither Rahim nor his brothers is coming.
- Correct: Neither Rahim nor his brothers are coming.
- 💡 Rule: 'Either...or' বা 'Neither...nor' থাকলে Verb-এর সবচেয়ে কাছের (Nearest) Subject অনুযায়ী Verb নির্ধারিত হয়। এখানে 'brothers' plural, তাই 'are' হবে।
৬. Uncountable Nouns দেখতে Plural মনে হলেও Singular#
News, Mathematics, Physics, Information, Furniture, Traffic—এগুলোর শেষে 's' থাকলেও বা সামগ্রিক অর্থে বোঝাতে এগুলো Uncountable Noun এবং Singular。
- ❌ Incorrect: The news are shocking.
- Correct: The news is shocking.
- ❌ Incorrect: All the furnitures are new.
- Correct: All the furniture is new. (Furniture নিজেই singular/uncountable, 'furnitures' হয় না)।
