Common Noun and Pronoun Errors
Common Noun and Pronoun Errors for Bangladeshi Learners
Correct mistakes in noun number, pronoun forms, and reference.
1. The "Plural Uncountable" Mistake#
Bangla-তে আমরা বলি "অনেক তথ্য", "সব আসবাবপত্র"। এগুলো দেখে আমরা English-এ s/es যোগ করে plural করার চেষ্টা করি, যা সম্পূর্ণ ভুল!
- Incorrect: I need some informations.
- Correct: I need some information.
- Incorrect: We bought new furnitures for our flat.
- Correct: We bought new furniture for our flat.
Common Uncountable Nouns (এদের সাথে কখনো s/es যুক্ত হবে না): Information, Furniture, Advice, Scenery, Luggage, Baggage, Hair, Homework, Poetry.
Pro Tip: যদি সংখ্যা বোঝাতে চান, তবে বলতে হবে: a piece of advice, two pieces of information ইত্যাদি।
2. "One of the..." Structure Error#
আমরা বন্ধুদের মধ্যে একজনের কথা বলতে গিয়ে noun-টিকে singular রেখে দিই, যা BCS, admission test এবং IELTS-এ খুব common একটি ভুল।
- Rule: One of + Plural Noun + Singular Verb
- Incorrect: One of my friend is coming.
- Correct: One of my friends is coming.
- Incorrect: Dhaka is one of the biggest city in Bangladesh.
- Correct: Dhaka is one of the biggest cities in Bangladesh.
ব্যাখ্যা: অনেকগুলোর (friends) মধ্য থেকে কেবল একজন (One), তাই noun plural হবে কিন্তু verb singular হবে।
3. Introducing Yourself: "Myself..."#
আমাদের দেশে interview বা viva board-এ প্রায়ই শোনা যায়: "Myself Shakil..."। এটি grammatical দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে সম্পূর্ণ ভুল। Reflexive pronoun কখনো sentence-এর subject হতে পারে না।
- Incorrect: Myself Shakil, I am from Sylhet.
- Correct: I am Shakil, I am from Sylhet. / My name is Shakil.
4. Subject vs. Object Pronoun (Between You and I?)#
Preposition-এর পর সবসময় Pronoun-এর Objective form (me, him, her, us, them) বসে, Subjective form (I, he, she, we) নয়।
- Incorrect: This matter is strictly between you and I.
- Correct: This matter is strictly between you and me.
- Incorrect: The teacher gave the gifts to Farhan and I.
- Correct: The teacher gave the gifts to Farhan and me.
5. Everybody / Everyone + Singular Pronoun#
"Everybody" বা "Everyone" শুনলে মনে হয় অনেকে, কিন্তু grammatically এরা Singular Indefinite Pronoun। তাই এদের সাথে verb এবং pronoun দুটোই singular হওয়া উচিত।
- Incorrect: Everyone should bring their own pen.
- Correct (Formal): Everyone should bring his or her own pen.
- Informal/Modern usage: Casual English-এ "their" ব্যবহার প্রচলিত হলেও, formal writing বা academic exam-এ singular pronoun বা neutral wording ব্যবহার করা নিরাপদ।
- Incorrect: Everybody are ready.
- Correct: Everybody is ready.
6. "Both" vs. "Both of them"#
- Incorrect: Both did not attend the meeting.
- Correct: Neither of them attended the meeting. (Negative sentence-এ 'both' ব্যবহার না করে 'neither' ব্যবহার করতে হয়)।
Quick Practice Checklist:#
- 1.Advice নয়, বলুন Advice (No Advices).
- 2.One of my brother নয়, বলুন One of my brothers.
- 3.Myself Fahim নয়, বলুন I am Fahim.
- 4.Between he and me নয়, বলুন Between him and me.
