Basic Subject-Verb Agreement (সহজ বাংলায় নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ)

Subject-Verb Agreement হলো ইংরেজি গ্রামারের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটা টপিক। BCS, Admission Test বা Daily English conversation—সব জায়গায় এই নিয়মগুলো কাজে লাগে।
মুল নিয়মটা খুব সহজ: 👉 Singular Subject = Singular Verb 👉 Plural Subject = Plural Verb
চলুন ৪টি বেসিক রুলস সহজে দেখে নিই:
- ১.Basic Rule (একবচন বনাম বহুবচন):
Subject যদি Singular (একজন/একটি) হয়, Verb-ও Singular হবে। Present Indefinite Tense-এ Singular Subject হলে Verb-এর সাথে s/es যুক্ত হয়।
- Example: He works hard. (He = singular, তাই works)
- Example: They work hard. (They = plural, তাই work)
- ২.'And' দিয়ে দুটি Subject যুক্ত হলে:
যখন দুটি বা ততোধিক Noun/Pronoun 'and' দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়, তখন সাধারণত Plural Verb বসে।
- Example: Rahim and Karim are coming today. (দুজন ব্যক্তি, তাই 'is' না হয়ে 'are' হবে)
- ৩.'Prepositional Phrase' নিয়ে কনফিউশন (সবচেয়ে কমন ভুল):
Subject এবং Verb-এর মাঝে অনেক সময় 'of, with, along with' ইত্যাদি দিয়ে বড় Phrase থাকে। খেয়াল রাখতে হবে Verb কিন্তু Real Subject অনুযায়ী বসবে, মাঝের শব্দের ওপর নয়।
- Incorrect: The quality of the mangoes are good.
- Correct: The quality of the mangoes is good. (এখানে আসল Subject হলো 'The quality' যা singular, 'mangoes' নয়!)
- ৪.Everyone, Everybody, Each, Nobody থাকলে:
শুনতে Plural মনে হলেও এই শব্দগুলো গ্রামারে Singular ধরা হয়। তাই এগুলোর পর Singular Verb বসে।
- Example: Everybody wants to be happy. ('want' নয়, 'wants' হবে)
- Example: Each of the students has a pen. ('have' নয়, 'has' হবে)
