Subject-Verb Agreement

Subject-Verb Agreement হলো ইংরেজি গ্রামারের অন্যতম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক। সহজে বললে: Subject যদি Singular হয়, Verb-ও Singular হবে; আর Subject যদি Plural হয়, Verb-ও Plural হবে।

চলুন বাংলাদেশি শিক্ষার্থীদের বিভিন্ন পরীক্ষা (HSC, Admission, BCS, Job Exams) মাথায় রেখে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়মগুলো সহজ ভাষায় দেখে নেই:

Rule 1: Basic Rule (Singular Subject = Singular Verb, Plural Subject = Plural Verb)#

• Subject 3rd Person Singular (he, she, it, যেকোনো একক নাম) হলে Present Indefinite Tense-এ verb-এর সাথে s/es যোগ হয়।
• Example:
• He plays cricket. (Correct)
• They play cricket. (Correct)
• He play cricket. (Incorrect)

Rule 2: 'And' দিয়ে দুটি Subject যুক্ত হলে#

সাধারণত দুটি Noun/Pronoun যদি 'and' দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়, তবে verb Plural হয়।

• Example:
• Rahim and Karim are going to school.
• ব্যতিক্রম (Exception): যদি দুটি শব্দ মিলে একটি একক ভাব বা আইডিয়া বোঝায়:
• Bread and butter is my favorite breakfast. (এখানে রুটি-মাখন একসাথে একক খাবার বুঝিয়েছে)
• Slow and steady wins the race.

Rule 3: As well as, along with, together with, accompanied by, in addition to#

যদি দুটি Subject এই শব্দগুলো দিয়ে যুক্ত থাকে, তাহলে Verb নির্ধারিত হবে প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী (Second subject অনুযায়ী নয়)।

• Example:
• The teacher, along with his students, was present. ('students' plural হলেও প্রথম subject 'The teacher' singular, তাই 'was' হয়েছে)
• I, as well as my friends, am responsible for this. ('I' অনুযায়ী 'am' হয়েছে)

Rule 4: Either...or, Neither...nor, Not only...but also#

এই correlative conjunctions গুলোর ক্ষেত্রে Verb সবসময় তার সবচেয়ে কাছের (closest/second) Subject অনুযায়ী বসে।

• Example:
• Neither Rahim nor his friends have come. ('friends' plural, তাই 'have')
• Either you or he is guilty. ('he' singular, তাই 'is')

Rule 5: Everyone, Everybody, Someone, Each, Every#

এগুলো Indefinite Pronoun এবং এরা সবসময় Singular অর্থ বহন করে। তাই এদের পর Singular Verb বসে।

• Example:
• Everyone has done their duty.
• Each of the boys gets a prize.
• Everybody wants peace.

Rule 6: Prepositionাল Phrase দ্বারা বিভ্রান্ত হবেন না#

Subject এবং Verb-এর মাঝে prepositional phrase থাকলে মূল Subject খুঁজে বের করতে হবে।

• Example:
• The quality of the mangoes is good. (এখানে subject 'mangoes' নয়, মূল subject হলো 'The quality', যা singular)
• The colors of the rainbow are beautiful. (Subject হলো 'The colors')

Rule 7: দূরত্ব, টাকা, সময় এবং পরিমাপ (Distance, Money, Time)#

এগুলো দেখতে plural লাগলেও একটি একক পরিমাণ (single unit) বোঝায়, তাই Verb singular হয়।

• Example:
• Fifty miles is a long distance. ('Fifty miles' হলেও singular unit)
• Ten thousand taka is enough for this trip.
• Two hours is not enough to finish this exam.

Quick Exam Tip:#

Sentence বড় হলে প্রথমে মূল Headword/Subject কোনটি তা চিহ্নিত করুন, তারপর preposition বা অতিরিক্ত clause বাদ দিয়ে verb মেলান।
