আমরা প্রায়ই Subject-Verb Agreement করতে গিয়ে Units of measurement, time, money কিংবা percentages দেখলে কনফিউজড হয়ে যাই। মনে হয় যেহেতু subject-এ 's' বা plural number আছে, verb-ও plural হবে। কিন্তু নিয়মটা সবসময় এমন না!

চলুন একদম সহজ বাংলায় নিয়মগুলো দেখে নেওয়া যাক, যা BCS, Bank Exam কিংবা Varsity Admission Test-এ খুব বেশি আসে।

১. Single Unit হিসেবে Time, Money & Distance#

Time (সময়), Money (টাকা), এবং Distance (দূরত্ব) যখন একটি Single Whole Unit (একক পরিমাণ) হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়, তখন plural noun থাকলেও Verb সবসময় Singular হবে।

• Distance (দূরত্ব):
• Incorrect: Ten miles are a long walk.
• Correct: Ten miles is a long walk. (এখানে 'Ten miles' আলাদা ১০টি মাইল নয়, বরং একটি নির্দিষ্ট দূরত্বকে বোঝাচ্ছে)।

• Money (টাকা/অর্থ):
• Incorrect: Five thousand taka are a large amount.
• Correct: Five thousand taka is a large amount.

• Time (সময়):
• Incorrect: Three years are a long time to wait.
• Correct: Three years is a long time to wait.

Note (ব্যতিক্রম): তবে টাকা বা পয়েন্টগুলো যদি আলাদা আলাদা উপাদান (individual items) হিসেবে বোঝায়, তখন verb Plural হয়। * Example: Ten dollar bills were scattered on the floor. (এখানে ১০টি আলাদা নোট মেঝেতে ছড়িয়ে ছিল)।

২. Fractions (ভগ্নাংশ) এবং Percentages (শতকরা)#

Fractions (যেমন: half of, two-thirds of) বা Percentages (যেমন: 50% of)-এর ক্ষেত্রে Verb কী হবে, তা নির্ভর করে of-এর পরের Noun-টির উপর:

• Uncountable / Singular Noun হলে $\rightarrow$ Singular Verb:
• Two-thirds of the work is complete.
• Sixty percent of the water is contaminated.

• Plural Countable Noun হলে $\rightarrow$ Plural Verb:
• Two-thirds of the students are present today.
• Fifty percent of the apples are rotten.

৩. 'The Number of' vs 'A Number of'#

এটি বাংলাদেশি প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় সবচেয়ে বেশি আসা ট্রিকি রুলগুলোর একটি:

৪. Mass / Weight (ওজন বা পরিমাপ)#

ওজন বা আয়তনের ক্ষেত্রেও একই নিয়ম—নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ নির্দেশ করলে Singular verb হবে।

• Fifty kilograms is too heavy for me to lift.
• Five liters of oil was poured into the drum.

• 2.Fraction / Percentage + of + Singular/Uncountable $\rightarrow$ Singular Verb.
• 3.Fraction / Percentage + of + Plural $\rightarrow$ Plural Verb.
• 4.A number of $\rightarrow$ Plural Verb; The number of $\rightarrow$ Singular Verb.
