Agreement with Either/Neither and Or/Nor

Subject-Verb Agreement-এ 'Either...or' এবং 'Neither...nor' একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এবং tricky টপিক। BCS, Varsity Admission, Bank Job, কিংবা IELTS-এর মতো যেকোনো প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষায় প্রায়ই এই নিয়মটি থেকে প্রশ্ন আসে।

চলুন খুব সহজ নিয়মে এবং উদাহরণের মাধ্যমে এটি পরিষ্কার করে নিই:

১. The Proximity Rule (নিকটবর্তী Subject-এর নিয়ম)#

যখন দুটি Subject-কে "Either...or" অথবা "Neither...nor" দিয়ে যুক্ত করা হয়, তখন Verb-টি তার সবচেয়ে কাছের (closest) Subject অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হবে। একে 'Proximity Rule' বলা হয়।

• Structure: Either / Neither + Subject 1 + or / nor + Subject 2 + Verb (agrees with Subject 2)

ক. কাছের Subject-টি Singular হলে Verb-ও Singular হবে:#

• Example: Neither the teacher nor the student is present in the class. (এখানে verb-এর কাছের subject হলো 'student' [Singular], তাই verb হয়েছে 'is')
• Example: Either his friends or Rahim has done this. (কাছের subject 'Rahim' singular, তাই 'has')

খ. কাছের Subject-টি Plural হলে Verb-ও Plural হবে:#

• Example: Either Rahim or his friends have done this. (কাছের subject 'friends' plural, তাই verb হয়েছে 'have')
• Example: Neither the manager nor the employees were satisfied. (কাছের subject 'employees' plural, তাই 'were')

২. 'Either' বা 'Neither' যখন একাকী Subject হিসেবে বসে#

যদি বাক্যে 'or' বা 'nor' না থাকে এবং শুধু "Either" বা "Neither" বাক্যের Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়, তবে Verb সবসময় Singular হবে।

• Example: Neither of the two books is good. (বই দুটি Plural হওয়া সত্ত্বেও Neither-এর জন্য verb 'is' হয়েছে)
• Example: Either of the candidates is eligible for the job.

মনে রাখবেন: "Neither of the boys (is/are)..." - এখানে সঠিক উত্তর হবে is, 'are' নয়!

৩. Pronoun Agreement (সর্বনামের নিয়ম)#

Verb-এর মতো Pronoun-ও তার নিকটবর্তী Subject বা Antecedent অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তিত হয়।

• Example: Neither the teacher nor the students forgot their homework. (কাছের subject 'students' plural, তাই pronoun হয়েছে 'their')
• Example: Neither the students nor the teacher forgot his bag. (কাছের subject 'teacher' singular, তাই pronoun হয়েছে 'his')

৪. Common Exam Traps (সাধারণ ভুলসমূহ)#

❌ Wrong: Neither Karim nor his brothers is coming. ✔️ Correct: Neither Karim nor his brothers are coming. (কারণ 'brothers' plural এবং এটি verb-এর কাছে আছে)

❌ Wrong: Neither of the answers are correct. ✔️ Correct: Neither of the answers is correct. (কারণ 'Neither of...' স্ট্রাকচারে verb সর্বদা singular হয়)
