Fronting and Topicalization
Advanced Grammar: Fronting and Topicalization for Bangladeshi Learners
Move elements to the front for emphasis or discourse purposes.
What are Fronting and Topicalization?#
সাধারণত Standard English-এ sentence structure হয়: Subject + Verb + Object/Complement (S-V-O)।
উদাহরণ:
- I like cricket. (Subject + Verb + Object)
Types of Fronting with Examples#
1. Topicalization of Objects (Object-কে সামনে আনা)#
Object যখন sentence-এর শুরুতে বসে topic বা focal point হয়ে যায়:
- Normal: I love biryani, but I can't stand khichuri.
- Topicalized: Biryani, I love, but khichuri, I can't stand.
- Normal: She bought the blue saree, not the red one.
- Topicalized: The blue saree, she bought; the red one, she left behind.
(Note: Formal writing-এ Object fronting খুব বেশি ব্যবহার না করাই ভালো, তবে spoken English এবং narrative-এ contrast বোঝাতে দারুণ কার্যকর।)
2. Fronting Prepositional Phrases of Place & Movement (with Inversion)#
কোনো জায়গা বা দিকের কথা শুরুতে আনলে Verb ও Subject জায়গা বদল করে (Inversion ঘটে):
- Normal: An old tea stall stood at the corner of Dhaka University.
- Fronted: At the corner of Dhaka University stood an old tea stall.
- Normal: The bus went down the street.
- Fronted: Down the street went the bus.
Rule: Place/Direction phrase শুরুতে আসলে: Prepositional phrase + Verb + Subject।
3. Fronting Adjectives and Participles#
Adjective বা Participle Clause সামনে এনে literary বা dramatic আবহ তৈরি করা যায়:
- Normal: The days when we used to hang out at TSC are gone.
- Fronted: Gone are the days when we used to hang out at TSC.
- Normal: The old bridge was covered with mist.
- Fronted: Covered with mist, the old bridge looked mysterious.
4. Negative Fronting (Exam & IELTS-এর জন্য সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ)#
Negative বা restrictive adverbials (Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly, Little, Not only) শুরুতে বসলে sentence-এ Subject-Auxiliary Inversion (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যের মতো গঠন) করতে হয়:
- Normal: I have rarely seen such traffic in Chittagong.
- Fronted: Rarely have I seen such traffic in Chittagong.
- Normal: We little knew about his real plan.
- Fronted: Little did we know about his real plan.
Bangladeshi Learners-এর সাধারণ ভুল (Common Mistakes):#
❌ Wrong: Rarely I have seen such dedication. ✔ Correct: *Rarely have I seen such dedication.* (Negative fronting-এ auxiliary verb অবশ্যই subject-এর আগে আসবে!)
❌ Wrong: Under the tree a cow was sleeping. (Grammatically acceptable, but Fronting with Inversion looks more natural:) ✔ Better: *Under the tree slept a cow.* / *Under the tree was a cow sleeping.*
Summary & Practice#
- কেন ব্যবহার করবেন? IELTS Writing Task 2 বা Speaking-এ complex sentence variety এবং high grammatical range show করার জন্য Fronting খুবই powerful tool.
- Practice Exercise: নিচের বাক্যটিকে Negative Fronting ব্যবহার করে রূপান্তর করুন:
- "He had hardly entered the house when the phone rang."
- Answer: "Hardly had he entered the house when the phone rang."
