Agreement with Inverted Subjects
Subject-Verb Agreement with Inverted Subjects
Identify the true subject in there is/are and other inverted patterns.
Grammar Lesson: Agreement with Inverted Subjects#
সাধারণত English sentence-এ structure হয়: Subject + Verb (যেমন: The boy is running)।
- Incorrect: There is three books on the table.
- Correct: There are three books on the table. (Subject = three books [Plural], তাই 'are')
- Correct: Here comes the bus. (Subject = the bus [Singular], তাই 'comes')
২. স্থান বা দিক নির্দেশক Prepositional Phrase দিয়ে বাক্য শুরু হলে#
কখনও কখনও জোর দেওয়ার জন্য (emphasis) Prepositional phrase বাক্যের শুরুতে আনা হয়। এর ঠিক পরেই Verb বসে এবং শেষে Subject থাকে।
- Pattern: Prepositional Phrase + Verb + Subject
- Incorrect: Under the tree sits two old men.
- Correct: Under the tree sit two old men. (Subject = two old men [Plural], তাই 'sit')
- Correct: Along the road was a line of trees. (Subject = a line [Singular], তাই 'was')
৩. Negative বা Restrictive Adverb বাক্যের শুরুতে থাকলে#
বাক্যের শুরুতে যদি Never, Rarely, Seldom, Hardly, Scarcely, Barely, No sooner ইত্যাদি থাকে, তবে inversion ঘটে।
- Incorrect: Seldom he visits our village.
- Correct: Seldom does he visit our village. (Subject = he [3rd person singular], তাই Auxiliary verb = 'does')
- Correct: Rarely have we seen such determination. (Subject = we [Plural], তাই 'have')
৪. Interrogative Sentences (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য)#
প্রশ্নে সবসময় auxiliary verb আগে বসে, তবে verb-এর form সবসময় মূল subject-এর number ও person অনুযায়ী নির্ধারিত হয়।
- Incorrect: Where is your parents going?
- Correct: Where are your parents going? (Subject = your parents [Plural], তাই 'are')
- Correct: Does this route lead to Dhaka? (Subject = this route [Singular], তাই 'does')
💡 Exam Tips for Bangladeshi Students (BCS & University Admission):#
- Verb নির্বাচনের আগে নিজেকে প্রশ্ন করুন: "কে/কারা কাজটি করছে?" অথবা "কার সম্পর্কে বলা হচ্ছে?"
- শুরুতে থাকা Prepositional phrase-এর ভেতরের noun দেখে বিভ্রান্ত হবেন না।
- উদাহরণ: "Near the river stands/stand a magnificent mosque."
- এখানে river দেখে ভাববেন না; আসল বিষয় হলো 'a magnificent mosque' (Singular)। সুতরাং সঠিক উত্তর হবে: stands।
