Parallel Structure

Parallel Structure বা Parallelism হচ্ছে ইংলিশ গ্রামারের এমন একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম, যা বিভিন্ন Competitive Exam (যেমন: BCS, Bank Job, University Admission Test, এবং IELTS) এ প্রচুর আসে।

সহজ কথায় বলতে গেলে: একটি বাক্যে যখন দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ, phrase বা clause যুক্ত হয়, তখন তাদের grammatical form বা গঠন একই রকম (parallel) হতে হবে।

১. মূল নিয়ম (The Golden Rule)#

যদি বাক্যে একাধিক উপাদান থাকে:

• Noun থাকলে বাকিগুলোও Noun হবে।
• Adjective থাকলে বাকিগুলোও Adjective হবে।
• Gerund (Verb+ing) থাকলে বাকিগুলোও Gerund হবে।
• Infinitive (to + verb) থাকলে বাকিগুলোও Infinitive হবে।
• Past Tense থাকলে অন্যগুলোও Past Tense হবে।

২. Coordinating Conjunctions (and, but, or)-এর ক্ষেত্রে:#

• Example 1 (Gerunds/Verbs):
• ❌ Incorrect: Rahim likes swimming, to jog, and reading.
• ✔️ Correct: Rahim likes swimming, jogging, and reading. (এখানে swimming এবং reading হচ্ছে gerund, তাই 'to jog' না হয়ে 'jogging' হবে।)

• Example 2 (Adjectives):
• ❌ Incorrect: The teacher is knowledgeable, patient, and has humor.
• ✔️ Correct: The teacher is knowledgeable, patient, and humorous. (Knowledgeable এবং patient দুটিই Adjective, তাই শেষ অংশটিও 'has humor' না হয়ে Adjective 'humorous' হবে।)

৩. Correlative Conjunctions-এর ক্ষেত্রে:#

(Not only... but also, Either... or, Neither... nor, Both... and)

এই জোড়া শব্দগুলোর পর grammatical form হুবহু এক হতে হবে।

• Rule: Not only + [Noun] হলে But also + [Noun] হবে। Not only + [Verb] হলে But also + [Verb] হবে।
• ❌ Incorrect: He is not only a talented writer, but also writes well.
• ✔️ Correct: He is not only a talented writer but also a skilled speaker. (Noun phrase + Noun phrase)
• ✔️ Or: He not only writes well but also speaks fluently. (Verb phrase + Verb phrase)

৪. Comparison (than / as)-এর ক্ষেত্রে:#

তুলনা সবসময় সমজাতীয় জিনিসের মধ্যে হতে হয়।

• ❌ Incorrect: Driving a car is easier than to ride a bike.
• ✔️ Correct: Driving a car is easier than riding a bike. (Gerund vs Gerund)

৫. BCS ও Admission Test-এর জন্য কিছু কমন ট্রিকস:#

• 1.Preposition repetition:

• ❌ Incorrect: She was interested in drawing and to learn languages.
• ✔️ Correct: She was interested in drawing and in learning languages (or simply: drawing and learning languages).

• 2.Infinitives:

• যদি 'to' ব্যবহার করেন, তাহলে সবগুলোতে 'to' রাখতে পারেন অথবা শুধু প্রথমটির আগে 'to' রেখে বাকিগুলো base verb দিতে পারেন।
• ✔️ Correct: I want to read, write, and play. (to কমন নেওয়া হয়েছে)
• ✔️ Correct: I want to read, to write, and to play.
