Agreement with Relative Clauses

আজকের লেসনে আমরা শিখবো Agreement with Relative Clauses। বিভিন্ন Admission Test (DU, RU, etc.) এবং Job Exam (BCS, Bank) এ এই নিয়মটি থেকে প্রায়ই প্রশ্ন আসে।

১. মূল নিয়ম (The Core Rule):#

Relative Pronoun (who, which, that) এর নিজস্ব কোনো singular বা plural রূপ নেই। Relative clause-এর ভেতরে verb কী হবে, তা নির্ভর করে এর ঠিক আগের শব্দ অর্থাৎ Antecedent (পূর্বপদ)-এর ওপর।

• Antecedent Singular হলে Verb -> Singular
• Antecedent Plural হলে Verb -> Plural

Formula: Antecedent (Noun/Pronoun) + Relative Pronoun (who/which/that) + Verb (Antecedent অনুযায়ী)

Examples:#

• Incorrect: It is I who is responsible for this.
• Correct: It is I who am responsible for this.

(কারণ Relative pronoun 'who'-এর antecedent হলো 'I', তাই verb 'am' হবে।)

• Incorrect: It is you who has made the mistake.
• Correct: It is you who have made the mistake.

(Antecedent 'you', তাই verb 'have' হবে।)

২. সবচেয়ে বিভ্রান্তিকর নিয়ম: "One of the + Plural Noun + Relative Pronoun"#

অনেক শিক্ষার্থী এই প্যাটার্নে ভুল করে। চলুন পার্থক্যটি পরিষ্কার করা যাক:

Case A: 'One of the' থাকলে Verb সাধারণত Plural হয়#

যখন বাক্যটির গঠন হয়: Subject + Verb + one of the + Plural Noun + who/that + Plural Verb

• Example: He is one of the boys who play cricket well. (এখানে 'who' রেফার করছে 'the boys'-কে, 'He'-কে নয়। যেহেতু 'boys' plural, তাই verb হবে 'play', 'plays' নয়।)

Case B: 'The only one of the' থাকলে Verb Singular হয়#

যখন বাক্যে 'the only one' থাকে, তখন নির্দিষ্ট করে কেবল একজনকেই বোঝায়। তাই verb Singular হবে।

• Example: He is the only one of the boys who plays cricket well. (এখানে 'the only one' এর কারণে verb singular অর্থাৎ 'plays' হয়েছে।)

৩. 'Which' বা 'That' এর ব্যবহার:#

Non-living objects বা বস্তুর ক্ষেত্রেও একই নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য।

• This is the book that is very helpful. (book = singular, তাই 'is')
• These are the books that are very helpful. (books = plural, তাই 'are')

Q1: One of the students who _____ selected for the scholarship got a visa. (a) was (b) were (c) is (d) has been Answer: (b) were (ব্যাখ্যা: who-এর antecedent 'students' plural, তাই verb plural 'were' হবে।)

Q2: She is the only one of my friends who _____ French. (a) speak (b) speaks (c) are speaking (d) have spoken Answer: (b) speaks (ব্যাখ্যা: 'the only one' থাকার কারণে verb singular 'speaks' হবে।)

সারসংক্ষেপ (Summary Tip):#

Relative pronoun দেখলেই তার ঠিক আগের শব্দটি (Antecedent) লক্ষ্য করবেন। সেই শব্দটি Singular হলে Verb Singular, আর Plural হলে Verb Plural। শুধু মনে রাখবেন 'the only one' থাকলে সর্বদাই Singular!
