Subjunctive Mood

Subjunctive Mood: সহজ ভাষায় সহজ নিয়মে#

BCS, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভর্তি পরীক্ষা (DU Admission), কিংবা Bank Job Exams—সব জায়গাতেই Subjunctive Mood থেকে প্রশ্ন প্রায় নিশ্চিত থাকে। দেখতে জটিল মনে হলেও এর নিয়ম কিন্তু একদম পরিষ্কার!

১. Subjunctive Mood কী?#

সাধারণত Subject যদি 3rd person singular (he/she/it) হয়, তবে Verb-এর সাথে s/es যুক্ত হয়, অথবা Past Tense হলে Verb-এর Past form হয়। কিন্তু Subjunctive Mood-এ কোনো urgency (জরুরি ভাব), recommendation (সুপারিশ), demand (দাবি) বা requirement বোঝালে, Subject যা-ই হোক না কেন—Verb সর্বদাই Base Form (V1) হবে। কোনো s/es, ing, ed, বা modal auxiliary (should/would) বসবে না।

২. Structure (গঠন):#

Subject + Subjunctive Verb + that + Subject + Verb-এর Base Form (V1) + Ext.

কিংবা Adjective-এর ক্ষেত্রে:

It is + Subjunctive Adjective + that + Subject + Verb-এর Base Form (V1) + Ext.

৩. গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Subjunctive Verbs ও Adjectives:#

Common Verbs:

• Advise, Demand, Insist, Order, Propose, Recommend, Request, Require, Suggest, Urge, Command.

Common Adjectives:

• Crucial, Essential, Imperative, Important, Mandatory, Necessary, Obligatory, Urgent, Vital.

৪. উদাহরণ দিয়ে ক্লিয়ার করা যাক:#

• Example 1:
• ❌ Incorrect: The doctor recommended that he takes medicine regularly.
• ✔️ Correct: The doctor recommended that he take medicine regularly. (he থাকা সত্ত্বেও takes হবে না, শুধু take হবে)

• Example 2:
• ❌ Incorrect: The teacher insisted that Rahim was present.
• ✔️ Correct: The teacher insisted that Rahim be present. (be verb-এর base form হলো 'be')

• Example 3:
• ❌ Incorrect: It is essential that you should study hard.
• ✔️ Correct: It is essential that you study hard. (American English-এ 'should' ব্যবহার করা ভুল)

৫. Negative & Passive Subjunctive (ভর্তি পরীক্ষার ট্রিকস!):#

• 1.Negative করতে চাইলে: সরাসরি not + base verb বসবে (does not, did not, do not বসবে না)।

• ✔️ Example: The boss demanded that he not come late again. (NOT: does not come)

• 2.Passive করতে চাইলে: be + V3 (Past Participle) বসবে।

• ✔️ Example: The committee recommended that the issue be solved immediately. (NOT: is solved বা was solved)

• 1.It is vital that everyone ______ (participate) in the meeting.

• Answer: participate

• 2.She requested that he ______ (not/leave) the room.

• Answer: not leave

• 3.The law requires that each car ______ (be) registered.
