Sequence of Tenses (ক্রিয়াকালের ধারাবাহিকতা)#

Complex Sentence-এ Principal Clause-এর Tense অনুযায়ী Subordinate Clause-এর Verb-এর Tense কীভাবে পরিবর্তিত হয়, তাকেই Sequence of Tenses বলা হয়। BCS, University Admission কিংবা HSC Grammar-এর জন্য এটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটি টপিক।

General Rules (সাধারণ নিয়মাবলী):#

Rule 1: Principal Clause যদি Present বা Future Tense হয়#

Principal Clause-এর Verb যদি Present Tense অথবা Future Tense-এ থাকে, তবে Subordinate Clause-এর Verb অর্থানুযায়ী যেকোনো Tense (Present, Past, or Future) হতে পারে।

• Examples:
• He says that he is busy. (Present + Present)
• He says that he was absent yesterday. (Present + Past)
• He says that he will go tomorrow. (Present + Future)
• Rahim will tell you that he has solved the problem. (Future + Present Perfect)

Rule 2: Principal Clause যদি Past Tense হয়#

Principal Clause-এর Verb যদি Past Tense-এ থাকে, তবে Subordinate Clause-এর Verb-ও অবশ্যই Corresponding Past Tense-এ রূপান্তরিত হবে।

• Examples:
• Incorrect: He said that he is reading.
• Correct: He said that he was reading. (Past + Past Continuous)
• Incorrect: I knew that he will come.
• Correct: I knew that he would come. (Past + Past Future / Future in the Past)
• She thought that she had lost her purse. (Past + Past Perfect)

Exceptions (ব্যতিক্রমসমূহ - পরীক্ষার জন্য সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ!):#

Principal Clause Past Tense হওয়া সত্ত্বেও কিছু ক্ষেত্রে Subordinate Clause Past Tense হয় না:

Exception 1: Universal Truth (চিরন্তন সত্য) বা Habitual Fact (অভ্যাসগত কর্ম)#

Subordinate Clause যদি কোনো চিরন্তন সত্য, ভৌগোলিক সত্য বা নিয়মিত অভ্যাস বোঝায়, তবে Principal Clause Past Tense হলেও Subordinate Clause-এর Verb সর্বদা Present Indefinite Tense থাকবে।

• Examples:
• The teacher said that the earth moves round the sun. (moves, not moved)
• We learned that honesty is the best policy. (is, not was)

Exception 2: Comparison (তুলনা) প্রকাশ পেলে#

'Than' বা 'As well as' দিয়ে যুক্ত Subordinate Clause-এ ভাব প্রকাশের স্বার্থে Principal Clause Past হলেও Subordinate Clause অন্য Tense-এ থাকতে পারে।

• Examples:
• He loved me more than he loves his brother now.

Exception 3: Conjunction 'Lest' থাকলে#

Principal Clause যাই থাকুক না কেন, Subordinate Clause যদি lest দিয়ে শুরু হয়, তবে তার Structure হবে: lest + Subject + should/might + Base Form of Verb (V1)।

• Examples:
• He ran fast lest he should miss the train.

• Answer: would go (told Past Tense, তাই will变成了would)

• 2.Galileo proved that the earth ______ (revolve) around the sun.

• Answer: revolves (চিরন্তন সত্য বা Universal Truth)

• 3.I believed what he ______ (say).

• Answer: said (Principal Clause Past, তাই Past Indefinite)
