Tense Consistency

Tense Consistency কী এবং কেন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ?#

আমরা যখন ইংরেজিতে কথা বলি বা লিখি, তখন প্রায়ই একটি কমন ভুল করি—একই বাক্য (Sentence) বা অনুচ্ছেদে (Paragraph) অহেতুক এক Tense থেকে অন্য Tense-এ জাম্প করা।

Tense Consistency মানে হলো: একটি বাক্যে বা একটি প্যারাগ্রাফে সময়ের ধারাবাহিকতা (Time frame) বজায় রাখা। অর্থাৎ, আপনি যদি অতীতের কোনো ঘটনা বর্ণনা করেন, তবে পুরো বাক্য বা বর্ণনায় Past Tense ব্যবহার করতে হবে; মাঝখানে হঠাৎ Present Tense এনে গুলিয়ে ফেলা যাবে না।

১. Basic Rule: একই Time Frame বজায় রাখা#

যদি আপনার মূল ঘটনা অতীতে ঘটে থাকে, তবে সব ভার্বকে Past Tense-এ রাখতে হবে।

• ভুল: Yesterday, Rahim went to the market and buys some vegetables. ❌ (went হলো Past, কিন্তু buys হলো Present—এখানে Tense inconsistent)
• সঠিক: Yesterday, Rahim went to the market and bought some vegetables. ✔️

২. Coordinating Conjunction (and, but, so) দিয়ে যুক্ত বাক্য#

দুটি সমান্তরাল কাজ (Parallel actions) একই সময়ে ঘটলে দুটির Tense-ই এক হতে হবে।

• ভুল: She smiled at me and says hello. ❌
• সঠিক: She smiled at me and said hello. ✔️
• ভুল: I study hard, but I failed the test. ❌ (যদি ঘটনাটি অতীতের ফলাফল হয়)
• সঠিক: I studied hard, but I failed the test. ✔️

৩. Complex Sentences (Sequence of Tense)#

Complex sentence-এ Principal Clause (মূল অংশ) Past Tense হলে Subordinate Clause (নির্ভরশীল অংশ)-টিও সাধারণত Past Tense হয়।

• ভুল: He told me that he is coming to Dhaka. ❌
• সঠিক: He told me that he was coming to Dhaka. ✔️
• ভুল: I thought that you know the answer. ❌
• সঠিক: I thought that you knew the answer. ✔️

৪. Exception (ব্যতিক্রম): Universal Truth বা চিরন্তন সত্য#

Principal Clause যদি Past Tense-ও হয়, কিন্তু Subordinate Clause-এ কোনো চিরন্তন সত্য (Universal truth), বৈজ্ঞানিক সত্য (Scientific fact) বা সাধারণ সত্য বোঝায়, তবে তা সবসময় Present Indefinite Tense থাকবে।

• ভুল: The teacher said that the earth moved round the sun. ❌
• সঠিক: The teacher said that the earth moves round the sun. ✔️
• ভুল: We learned in school that water boiled at 100°C. ❌
• সঠিক: We learned in school that water boils at 100°C. ✔️

৫. Paragraph Writing বা Story Telling-এ Tense Consistency#

আমাদের HSC, BCS বা IELTS পরীক্ষায় Story/Essay লেখার সময় এই ভুলটি সবচেয়ে বেশি দেখা যায়:

• Inconsistent (ভুল): Last year, I visited Cox's Bazar with my family. The beach is crowded and the weather was nice. Suddenly, it starts raining and we ran to a shelter. ❌
• Consistent (সঠিক): Last year, I visited Cox's Bazar with my family. The beach was crowded and the weather was nice. Suddenly, it started raining and we ran to a shelter. ✔️

Quick Summary / চেকলিস্ট:#

• 1.আপনি কোন সময়ে লিখছেন বা কথা বলছেন তা ঠিক করুন (Past, Present নাকি Future)।
• 2.'And' বা 'But' দিয়ে যুক্ত কাজের Tense মিলিয়ে দেখুন।
• 3.Indirect Speech-এ কথা বলার সময় Principal Clause past হলে dependent clause-ও past করুন (চিরন্তন সত্য বাদে)।
