Colons

English writing-এ Punctuation Mark গুলোর মধ্যে Colon (:) অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। অনেক Bangladeshi students বা learners semicolon (;) আর colon (:)-এর মধ্যে গুলিয়ে ফেলেন। আজকের এই lesson-এ আমরা খুব সহজ ভাষায় Colon-এর ব্যবহার শিখব।

১. Colon দেখতে কেমন?#

Colon দেখতে দুটি উল্লম্ব বিন্দুর মতো: :

২. মূল নিয়ম (Golden Rule):#

Colon ব্যবহার করার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নিয়ম হলো:

Colon-এর আগের অংশটি অবশ্যই একটি Complete Sentence (Independent Clause) হতে হবে।

অর্থাৎ, Colon-এর আগের অংশটি একা একা একটি সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রকাশ করতে সক্ষম হতে হবে।

৩. Colon-এর প্রধান ব্যবহারসমূহ (Main Uses):#

ক. কোনো List বা তালিকা পরিচয় করাতে (To Introduce a List):#

যখন আপনি কোনো কিছুর তালিকা দিতে চান, তখন Colon ব্যবহার করা হয়।

• Example: I need three things from the bazaar: rice, lentils, and mustard oil.
• Example: She speaks three languages fluently: Bangla, English, and Hindi.

⚠️ সতর্কতা (Common Mistake): যদি বাক্যে such as, including, বা verb সরাসরি থাকে, তবে Colon বসবে না।

• ❌ ভুল: I bought: apples, oranges, and bananas.
• ✔️ সঠিক: I bought three types of fruits: apples, oranges, and bananas.
• ❌ ভুল: The reasons are: rain, traffic, and laziness.
• ✔️ সঠিক: There are three reasons: rain, traffic, and laziness.

খ. ব্যাখ্যা বা উদাহরণ দিতে (To Introduce an Explanation or Elaboration):#

যখন দ্বিতীয় বাক্যটি প্রথম বাক্যটির ব্যাখ্যা দেয় বা clarify করে:

• Example: He had only one goal in life: to become a BCS cadre.
• Example: The reason for the match delay was obvious: heavy downpour in Mirpur.

গ. উক্তি বা Quotation উদ্ধৃত করতে (To Introduce a Quotation):#

বিশেষ করে যখন কোটেশনটি একটু লম্বা বা আনুষ্ঠানিক (formal) হয়:

• Example: The teacher gave us a strict warning: "Anyone caught copying in the exam hall will be expelled immediately."

ঘ. Formal Letter বা ইমেলের সম্বোধনে (Salutation):#

Formal বা Business communication-এ Dear Sir/Madam-এর পর Colon দেওয়া হয় (American English-এ এটি খুব প্রচলিত):

• Example: Dear Mr. Rahman:
• Example: To Whom It May Concern:

ঙ. সময়, অনুপাত এবং বইয়ের অধ্যায় নির্দেশ করতে (Time, Ratios, and References):#

• Time: ট্রেনটি ছাড়বে 10:30 PM এ।
• Ratio (অনুপাত): The teacher-student ratio in this college is 1:30.
• Bible/Quran/Book References: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255 অথবা Genesis 1:1.

৪. Quick Summary / মনে রাখার টিপস:#

• ১.Colon দেওয়ার আগে নিশ্চিত হোন যে আগের অংশটি একটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ বাক্য।
• ২.'such as', 'for example', 'like'-এর পর সরাসরি colon বসাবেন না।
• ৩.Colon মূলত বলে— "Wait, look at what is coming next!"
